In recent years, biodegradable Mg-based materials have been increasingly studied to be used in the medical industry and beyond. A way to improve biodegradability rate in sync with the healing process of the natural human bone is to alloy Mg with other biocompatible elements. The aim of this research was to improve biodegradability rate and biocompatibility of Mg-0.5Ca alloy through addition of Y in 0.5/1.0/1.5/2.0/3.0wt.%. To characterize the chemical composition and microstructure of experimental Mg alloys, scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive spectroscopy (EDS), light microscopy (LM), and X-ray diffraction (XRD) were used. The linear polarization resistance (LPR) method was used to calculate corrosion rate as a measure of biodegradability rate. The cytocompatibility was evaluated by MTT assay (3-(4,5-dimethylthiazole-2-yl)-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide) and fluorescence microscopy. Depending on chemical composition, the dendritic α-Mg solid solution, as well as lamellar MgCa and MgY intermetallic compounds were found. The lower biodegradability rates were found for Mg-0.5Ca-2.0Y and Mg-0.5Ca-3.0Y which have correlated with values of cell viability. The addition of 2-3 wt.%Y in the Mg-0.5Ca alloy improved both the biodegradability rate and cytocompatibility behavior.

An animal model of radiation-induced lung injury (RILI) was established using female rats given sublethal whole-thorax X-ray irradiation (15 Gy) at a dose rate of 2.7 Gy/min. The rats were studied for up to day 45 and compared with sham-irradiated controls.

A highly sensitive and rapid LC-MS/MS method was developed and validated for the quantification of dexamethasone in rat plasma and brain tissue. Protein precipitation method was used for sample preparation. The separation of dexamethasone and the IS (labetalol) was achieved on an Atlantis dC column using an isocratic mobile phase (10 mM ammonium formate and acetonitrile, 25/75, v/v) delivered at 0.

The garden dormouse (Eliomys quercinus) is a fat-storing mammal that undergoes annual periods of hibernation to mitigate the effects of food scarcity, low ambient temperatures, and reduced photoperiod that characterize winter. Like other hibernating species, this animal suppresses its metabolic rate by downregulating nonessential genes and processes in order to prolong available energy stores and limit waste accumulation throughout the season. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, single-stranded, noncoding RNAs that bind to mRNA and mediate post-transcriptional suppression, making miRNA ideal for modulating widespread changes in gene expression, including global downregulation typified by metabolic rate depression.

We demonstrate the proof of concept of increasing the bioavailability of carbon substrates, derived from plastic waste, for their conversion to the biodegradable polymer polyhydroxyalkanoate [PHA] by bacteria and test various approaches to PHA accumulation through batch, fed batch and continuous culture. Styrene, ethylbenzene, and toluene are produced from the pyrolysis of mixed plastic waste (Kaminsky, 2021; Miandad et al., 2017), but they are volatile and poorly soluble in water making them difficult to work with in aqueous fermentation systems.

Background: Previous studies have demonstrated perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) impact renal function, with albumin playing dominant role in their transport and accumulation. However, the mediating role of albumin in PFAS-induced renal impairment and the identification of sensitive populations remain uninvestigated.
Methods: This study included 9328 individuals from NHANES 1999-2018 with data on serum PFAS, creatinine, albumin, and covariates.
