Authenticity of dried aromatic herbs and herbal powders for the ASU (ayurvedic, siddha, unani) drug formulations is a key of their clinical success. The DNA based authentication is an answer; however, extraction of PCR quality DNA from such material is often problematic due to the presence of various co-extracted PCR inhibitors. Here, we report a novel DNA isolation and purification method utilizing cow skim milk that successfully yields PCR quality DNA from the aromatic herbs and dried herbal powders. The improved method presented in this study could be used as an alternative to successfully extract PCR quality DNA from such plant materials. Further, we present a set of robust matK primers which could be used as plant barcoding resource in future studies.

Indeed, spices as well as aromatic herbs are to be considered not only for their important values of antimicrobial agents or flavor enhancers everybody knows, but also, thanks to their olfactory and gustatory spectrum, as drivers to stimulate the consumers' memories and, in a stronger way, emotions. Nest fumigation behavior involves the incorporation of fresh green plant fragments that contain ectoparasite-repellent volatile compounds into birds' nests. This study examines the microbial community composition, metabolite characteristics, and the relationship between the two during the fermentation process of Yi traditional fermented liquor. Yi traditional fermented foods have a profound historical and cultural background, with significant ethnic characteristics. As a case in point, Yi traditional fermented liquor is typically prepared using local plants or traditional Chinese herbs as fermentation substrates and undergoes a lengthy fermentation process, resulting in a fermented beverage that is reputed to have beneficial effects on human health.
