X-ray crystallography and NMR contain complementary information for the structural characterization of biological macromolecules. X-ray diffraction is primarily sensitive to the overall shape of the molecule, whereas NMR is mostly sensitive to the atomic detail. Their combination can therefore provide a stronger justification for the resulting structure. For their combination we have recently proposed REFMAC-NMR, which relies on primary data from both techniques for joint refinement. This possibility raises the compelling question of how far the complementarity can be extended. In this paper, we describe an integrative approach to the refinement with NMR data of four X-ray structures of hen-egg-white lysozyme, solved at atomic resolution in four different crystal forms, and we demonstrate that the outcome critically depends on the crystal form itself, reflecting the sensitivity of NMR to fine details.

: Surgery for adolescent idiopathic deformities is often aimed at improving aesthetic appearance, striving for the best possible correction. However, severe and rigid scoliotic curves not only present aesthetic issues but can also compromise cardiopulmonary health and cause early neurological impairment due to spinal cord compression, posing significant risks of morbidity and mortality if untreated. Conservative treatments are ineffective for severe curves, defined by scoliotic angles over 70° and flexibility below 30% on lateral bending X-rays.

Five representatives of a novel type of di(hydroperoxy)alkane adducts of phosphine oxides have been synthesized and fully characterized, including their solubility in organic solvents. The phosphine oxide CyPO () has been used in combination with the corresponding aldehydes to create the adducts CyPO·(HOO)CHCH (), CyPO·(HOO)CHCHCH (), CyPO·(HOO)CH(CH)CH (), CyPO·(HOO)CH(CH)CH (), and CyPO·(HOO)CH(CH)CH (). All adducts crystallize easily and contain the peroxide and phosphine oxide hydrogen-bonded in 1:1 ratios.
