Published: June 2020

We consider a one parameter family of Laplacians on a closed manifold and study the semi-classical limit of its analytically parametrized eigenvalues. Our results establish a vector valued analogue of a theorem for scalar Schrödinger operators on Euclidean space by Luc Hillairet which applies to geometric operators like Witten's Laplacian on differential forms.

Recent studies and suggest that flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) on its own might be able to act as a biological magnetic field sensor. Motivated by these observations, in this study, we develop a detailed quantum theoretical model for the radical pair mechanism (RPM) for the flavin adenine biradical within the FAD molecule. We use the results of existing molecular dynamics simulations to determine the time-varying distance between the radicals on FAD, which we then feed into a quantum master equation treatment of the RPM.

Nanothermodynamics: There's Plenty of Room on the Inside.

Nanomaterials (Basel)

November 2024

Department of Physics, Arizona State University, Tempe, AZ 85287-1504, USA.

Nanothermodynamics provides the theoretical foundation for understanding stable distributions of statistically independent subsystems inside larger systems. In this review, it is emphasized that extending ideas from nanothermodynamics to simplistic models improves agreement with the measured properties of many materials. Examples include non-classical critical scaling near ferromagnetic transitions, thermal and dynamic behavior near liquid-glass transitions, and the 1/-like noise in metal films and qubits.

2,5-Bis(phenylethynyl) rhodacyclopentadienes (RCPDs), as a type of Rh(iii) complex, exhibit unusually intense fluorescence and slow intersystem crossing (ISC) due to weak metal-ligand interactions. However, details on their ultrafast photophysics and ISC dynamics are limited. In this work, electronic relaxation upon photoexcitation of two substituted RCPDs with two -COMe (A-RC-A) or -NMe/-COMe (D-RC-A) end groups are comprehensively investigated using femtosecond transient absorption spectroscopy and theoretical analysis.

Phase and Amplitude Modes in the Anisotropic Dicke Model with Matter Interactions.

Entropy (Basel)

July 2024

Departamento de Física, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana-Iztapalapa, Av. Ferrocarril San Rafael Atlixco 186, Mexico City C.P. 09310, Mexico.

Phase and amplitude modes, also called polariton modes, are emergent phenomena that manifest across diverse physical systems, from condensed matter and particle physics to quantum optics. We study their behavior in an anisotropic Dicke model that includes collective matter interactions. We study the low-lying spectrum in the thermodynamic limit via the Holstein-Primakoff transformation and contrast the results with the semi-classical energy surface obtained via coherent states.

Article Synopsis
  • This study uses molecular dynamics simulations to explore how temperature affects kinetic properties in heavy atom tunneling reactions, specifically focusing on the Cope rearrangement of semibullvalene while incorporating nuclear quantum effects (NQEs).
  • The research finds that NQEs significantly influence the temperature-dependent behavior of free energy barriers and reaction rates, contrasting with classical dynamics where the activation free energy shows minimal temperature dependence.
  • Results reveal a transition in quantum effects from being restricted to zero point energy at higher temperatures to a regime dominated by tunneling at low temperatures, providing faster reaction rates; comparisons with experimental data and semi-classical theory show consistency in behavior across the temperature ranges.
