When considering the deployment of renewable energy sources in systems, the challenge of their utilization comes from their time instability when a mismatch between production and demand occurs. With the integration of thermal storages into systems that utilize renewable energy sources, such mismatch can be evened out. The use of phase-change materials (PCMs) as thermal storage has a theoretical advantage over the sensible one because of their high latent heat that is released or accumulated during the phase-change process. Therefore, the present paper is a review of latent thermal storages in hydronic systems for heating, cooling and domestic hot water in buildings. The work aims to offer an overview on applications of latent thermal storages coupled with heat pumps and solar collectors. The review shows that phase-change materials improve the release of heat from thermal storage and can supply heat or cold at a desired temperature level for longer time periods. The PCM review ends with the results from one of the Horizon2020 research projects, where indirect electrical storage in the form of thermal storage is considered. The review is a technological outline of the current state-of-the-art technology that could serve as a knowledge base for the practical implementation of latent thermal storages. The paper ends with an overview of energy storage maturity and the objectives from different roadmaps of European bodies.

A bright future lies ahead for the application of natural biocomposites in the food industry. In this research, edible biocomposite films were created using sodium caseinate (SC)-gum tragacanth (GT) and incorporating carum carvi seed essential oil (EO) as a nanoemulsion. Different ratios of oil were used as variables.

This paper introduces an optimal sizing approach for battery energy storage systems (BESS) that integrates frequency regulation via an advanced frequency droop model (AFDM). In addition, based on the AFDM, a new formulation for charging/discharging of the battery with the purpose of system frequency control is presented. The studied MG system that consists of PV units, a diesel generator (DG), a combined heat and power (CHP) unit, a gas boiler, and a BESS is designed to meet the consumers' thermal and electrical load requirements as well as system frequency regulation.

Lattice thermal conductivity in CrSBr: the effects of interlayer interaction, magnetic ordering and external strain.

J Phys Condens Matter

January 2025

South China Normal University, School of Physics, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Quantum Engineering and Quantum Materials, Guangdong Basic Research Center of Excellence for Structure and Fundamental Interactions of Matter, Guangzhou, 510631, CHINA.

With the continuous development of digital information and big data technologies, the ambient temperature and heat generation during the operation of magnetic storage devices play an increasingly crucial role in ensuring data security and device stability. In this study, we examined the lattice thermal conductivity of the van der Waals magnetic semiconductor CrSBr from bulk to monolayer structures using first-principles calculations and the phonon Boltzmann transport equation. Our results indicated that lattice thermal conductivity show anisotropy and CrSBr bilayer exhibits lower thermal conductivity at all temperatures.

AA-Stacked Hydrogen-Substituted Graphdiyne for Enhanced Lithium Storage.

Angew Chem Int Ed Engl

January 2025

Leibniz University Hanover: Leibniz Universitat Hannover, Institute for Solid State Physics, GERMANY.

Graphdiyne (GDY) has been considered a promising electrode material for application in electrochemical energy storage. However, studies on GDY featuring an ordered interlayer stacking are lacking, which is supposed to be another effective way to increase lithium binding sites and diffusion pathways. Herein, we synthesized a hydrogen-substituted GDY (HsGDY) with a highly-ordered AA-stacking structure via a facile alcohol-thermal method.

Thiamin, an essential micronutrient, is a cofactor for enzymes involved in the central carbon metabolism and amino acids pathways. Despite efforts to enhance thiamin content in rice by incorporating thiamin biosynthetic genes, increasing thiamin content in endosperm remains challenging, possibly due to a lack of thiamin stability and/or a local sink. The introduction of storage proteins has been successful in biofortification strategies and similar efforts targeting thiamin led to a 3-4-fold increase in white rice.
