Three dimensional Polarized Light Imaging (3D-PLI) is an optical technique which allows mapping the spatial fiber architecture of fibrous postmortem tissues, at sub-millimeter resolutions. Here, we propose an analytical and fast approach to compute the fiber orientation distribution (FOD) from high-resolution vector data provided by 3D-PLI. The FOD is modeled as a sum of K orientations/Diracs on the unit sphere, described on a spherical harmonics basis and analytically computed using the spherical Fourier transform. Experiments are performed on rich synthetic data which simulate the geometry of the neuronal fibers and on human brain data. Results indicate the analytical FOD is computationally efficient and very fast, and has high angular precision and angular resolution. Furthermore, investigations on the right occipital lobe illustrate that our strategy of FOD computation enables the bridging of spatial scales from microscopic 3D-PLI information to macro- or mesoscopic dimensions of diffusion Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), while being a means to evaluate prospective resolution limits for diffusion MRI to reconstruct region-specific white matter tracts. These results demonstrate the interest and great potential of our analytical approach.

Background/objectives: Although extemporaneous formulations of anticancer drug products for personalized therapy are produced according to Good Hospital Pharmacy Manufacturing Practice, the lack of knowledge about drug stability under clinical conditions limits the second-time use of these highly costly medications in clinical practice. Therefore, the residual compounded drugs are considered waste and a cost item that negatively affects the healthcare system. In the context of the ever-increasing interest of the health system in applying practices in line with personalized medicine and spending review policies, this research aimed to demonstrate the feasibility of incorporating analytical techniques into daily routine practice.

Point-of-care (PoC) devices offer a promising solution for fast, portable, and easy-to-use diagnostics. These characteristics are particularly relevant in agrifood fields like viticulture where the early detection of plant stresses is crucial to crop yield. Microfluidics, with its low reagent volume requirements, is well-suited for such applications.

With the increasing global attention to deep learning and the advancements made in applying convolutional neural networks in electromagnetics, we have recently witnessed the utilization of deep learning-based networks for predicting the spectrum and electromagnetic properties of structures instead of traditional tools like fully numerical-based methods. In this study, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN is proposed for predicting spoof surface plasmon polaritons, enabling the examination of the absorption spectrum of metallic multilevel-grating structures (MMGS) and designing various sensor devices and absorbers in the shortest time possible. To expedite the training process of this network, a semi-analytical method of rigorous coupled-wave analysis (RCWA) enhanced with the fast Fourier factorization (FFF) technique has been employed, significantly reducing the data generation time for training.

Digital fluorescence immunoassay (DFI) based on random dispersion magnetic beads (MBs) is one of the powerful methods for ultrasensitive determination of protein biomarkers. However, in the DFI, improving the limit of detection (LOD) is challenging since the ratio of signal-to-background and the speed of manual counting beads are low. Herein, we developed a deep-learning network (ATTBeadNet) by utilizing a new hybrid attention mechanism within a UNet3+ framework for accurately and fast counting the MBs and proposed a DFI using CdS quantum dots (QDs) with narrow peak and optical stability as reported at first time.

SERS Detection of Hydrophobic Molecules: Thio-β-Cyclodextrin-Driven Rapid Self-Assembly of Uniform Silver Nanoparticle Monolayers and Analyte Trapping.

Biosensors (Basel)

High-sensitivity and repeatable detection of hydrophobic molecules through the surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) technique is a tough challenge because of their weak adsorption and non-uniform distribution on SERS substrates. In this research, we present a simple self-assembly protocol for monolayer SERS mediated by 6-deoxy-6-thio-β-cyclodextrin (β-CD-SH). This protocol allows for the rapid assembly of a compact silver nanoparticle (Ag NP) monolayer at the oil/water interface within 40 s, while entrapping analyte molecules within hotspots.
