AI Article Synopsis

  • EFSA reviewed the maximum residue levels (MRLs) for the pesticide pyridaben as outlined in Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005.
  • The evaluation included data from various European directives and authorizations to analyze pyridaben's presence in plants, processed goods, and livestock.
  • Although the consumer risk assessment showed no significant risks, there were gaps in required information, indicating that further review of some MRL proposals is needed by regulatory authorities.

Article Abstract

According to Article 12 of Regulation (EC) No 396/2005, EFSA has reviewed the maximum residue levels (MRLs) currently established at European level for the pesticide active substance pyridaben. To assess the occurrence of pyridaben residues in plants, processed commodities, rotational crops and livestock, EFSA considered the conclusions derived in the framework of Directive 91/414/EEC and under Commission Regulation (EC) No 33/2008 as well as the European authorisations reported by Member States (including the supporting residues data). Based on the assessment of the available data, MRL proposals were derived and a consumer risk assessment was carried out. Although no apparent risk to consumers was identified, some information required by the regulatory framework was missing. Hence, the consumer risk assessment is considered indicative only and some MRL proposals derived by EFSA still require further consideration by risk managers.

Ethiprole is a second-generation phenylpyrazole insecticide used in agricultural production as an alternative to fipronil due to its lower toxicity to bees. Ethiprole amide is chiral metabolite of ethiprole, but information regarding its formation and degradation in vegetables is limited. Here, the absolute configuration of ethiprole amide enantiomer was determined through circular dichroism, and the behaviors of chiral ethiprole and its metabolites in five kinds of vegetables were studied through field experiments.

Accurate determination of dielectric properties and surface characteristics of two-dimensional (2D) perovskite nanosheets, produced by chemical exfoliation of layered perovskites, is often hindered by exfoliation agent residues such as tetrabutylammonium (TBA). This study investigates the effect of ultraviolet (UV) light exposure duration on the removal of TBA residues from 2D Ca2NaNb4O13- nanosheets deposited on silicon substrates via Langmuir-Blodgett method using atomic force microscopy (AFM). Nanoscale adhesion forces between silicon AFM tips and nanofilms exposed to UV light for 3, 12, 18, and 24 hours were measured.

The European Commission mandated EFSA to assess the toxicity of bromide, the existing maximum residue levels (MRLs), and possible transfer from feed into food of animal origin. The critical effects of bromide in experimental animals are on the thyroid and central nervous system. Changes in thyroid hormone homeostasis could result in neurodevelopmental toxicity, among other adverse effects.

With the global surge in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), recycling spent LIBs has become an essential and urgent research area. In the context of global efforts to promote sustainable development, and achieve energy conservation and emission reduction, advancing recycling technologies that efficiently recover critical metals like Ni, Co, Mn, and Li is crucial. Herein, a novel and environmentally friendly simplified process for selectively extracting critical metals from the mixed electrode materials of spent LIBs is proposed for the first time.

Introduction: Equivocal or negative pituitary magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings raise a significant challenge in the management of persistent or recurrent Cushing's disease (CD), compromising the chances of success of a further transsphenoidal surgery (TSS). The aim of our study was to determine the diagnostic utility of 11C-methionine (MET) positron emission tomography coupled with computerized tomography (PET/CT) in localizing the residual or relapsing corticotroph adenoma.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the results of 11C-MET PET/CT performed in two tertiary medical centers between May 2002 and November 2023 in 22 patients with a persisting or recurrent CD after initial TSS and equivocal or negative pituitary MRI findings.
