The genetic mechanisms contributing to lifespan variation remain unresolved. Based on recent conceptual advances in our understanding of epigenetic potential and the relocalization of chromatin modifiers (RCM), we hypothesize that increased CpG density is protective against age-related erosion of the epigenetic landscape and may explain interspecific variation in lifespan.

CpG islands (CGIs) are rare, interspersed DNA sequences, which possess a significant deviation from background genomic distribution by exhibiting patterns of GC-rich and CpG-rich sequence, the density of which provides a good classification feature for long noncoding RNA (lncRNA) promoters. By reviewing previous CpG-related studies, we consider that the transcription regulation of about half of the human genes, mostly housekeeping (HK) genes, involves CGIs, their methylation states, CpG spacing, and other chromosomal parameters. However, the precise CGI definition and positioning of CGIs within gene structures, as well as specific CGI-associated regulatory mechanisms, all remain to be elucidated at individual gene and gene family levels, together with consideration of species and lineage specificity.

Background: Exposure to psychosocial stress is linked to a variety of negative health outcomes, including cardiovascular disease and its cardiometabolic risk factors. DNA methylation has been associated with both psychosocial stress and cardiometabolic disease; however, little is known about the mediating role of DNA methylation on the association between stress and cardiometabolic risk. Thus, using the high-dimensional mediation testing method, we conducted an epigenome-wide mediation analysis of the relationship between psychosocial stress and ten cardiometabolic risk factors in a multi-racial/ethnic population of older adults (n = 2668) from the Health and Retirement Study (mean age = 70.

A clinical audit on longer-term stroke management as a specific service in a primary care setting: Assessing adherence of service and clinical parameters.

PLOS Glob Public Health

December 2024

Department of Family Medicine, Long-Term Stroke Clinic, HCTM UKM Primary Care Clinic, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia, Jalan Yaacob Latiff, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

Primary-care long-term stroke care service offers comprehensive management at the community level. A clinical audit was carried out to assess the services of this clinic as compared to the established standardized criteria for longer-term stroke care.A retrospective audit was performed to evaluate the adherence to service parameters based on eleven criteria adapted from the Canadian Post-Stroke Checklist.

Sodium alginate and its modified counterpart as sustainable-based corrosion inhibitors for N80 pipeline carbon steel: Experimental and theoretical approach.

Sustainable and Resilient Materials Lab, Center for Integrative Petroleum Research (CIPR), College of Petroleum Engineering & Geosciences (CPG), King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals, Dhahran 31261, Saudi Arabia. Electronic address:

Sodium alginate is a highly promising biopolymer for use as an eco-friendly/green corrosion inhibitor (CI), despite its limited solubility. In this study, a green and water-soluble modified sodium alginate (MSA) salt was synthesized and employed as a CI on pipeline N80 carbon steel (N80CS) in artificial sea water (ASW) medium. Various analytical tools related to surface and structure were utilized to describe the properties of the newly synthesized MSA polymer.

UHRF1 ubiquitin ligase activity supports the maintenance of low-density CpG methylation.

Nucleic Acids Res

Department of Epigenetics, Van Andel Institute, 333 Bostwick Ave NE, Grand Rapids, MI 49503, USA.

The RING E3 ubiquitin ligase UHRF1 is an established cofactor for DNA methylation inheritance. The model posits that nucleosomal engagement through histone and DNA interactions directs UHRF1 ubiquitin ligase activity toward lysines on histone H3 tails, creating binding sites for DNMT1 through ubiquitin interacting motifs (UIM1 and UIM2). However, the extent to which DNMT1 relies on ubiquitin signaling through UHRF1 in support of DNA methylation maintenance remains unclear.
