The direct synthesis of hydrogen peroxide (HO) from molecular H and O offers an attractive, decentralized alternative to production compared to the current means of production, the anthraquinone process. Herein we evaluate the performance of a 0.5%Pd-4.5%Ni/TiO catalyst in batch and flow reactor systems using water as a solvent at ambient temperature. These reaction conditions are considered challenging for the synthesis of high HO concentrations, with the use of sub-ambient temperatures and alcohol co-solvents typical. Catalytic activity was observed to be stable to prolonged use in multiple batch experiments or in a flow system, with selectivities towards HO of 97% and 85%, respectively. This study was carried out in the absence of halide or acid additives that are typically used to inhibit sequential HO degradation reactions showing that this Pd-Ni catalyst has the potential to produce HO selectively. This article is part of a discussion meeting issue 'Science to enable the circular economy'.

L-valine holds wide-ranging applications in medicine, food, feed, and various industrial sectors. Escherichia coli, a pivotal strain in industrial L-valine production, features a concise fermentation period and a well-defined genetic background. This study focuses on mismatch repair genes (mutH, mutL, mutS, and recG) and genes associated with mutagenesis (dinB, rpoS, rpoD, and recA), employing a high-glucose adaptive culture in conjunction with metabolic modifications to systematically screen for superior phenotypes.

Throughout the life cycle of mushrooms, countless spores are released from the fruiting bodies. The spores have significant implications in the food and medicine industries due to pharmacological effects attributed to their bioactive ingredients. Moreover, high concentration of mushroom spores can induce extrinsic allergic reactions in mushroom cultivation workers.

Maize (Zea mays L.) performs highly efficient C photosynthesis by dividing photosynthetic metabolism between mesophyll and bundle sheath cells. In vivo physiological measurements are indispensable for C photosynthesis research as photosynthetic activities are easily interrupted by leaf section or cell isolation.

Bone marrow mesenchymal stromal cells (BM-MSCs) are integral components of the bone marrow microenvironment, playing a crucial role in supporting hematopoiesis. Recent studies have investigated the potential involvement of BM-MSCs in the pathophysiology of acute lymphoblastic leukemia (ALL). However, the exact contribution of BM-MSCs to leukemia progression remains unclear because of conflicting findings and limited characterization.

Cyclin-dependent kinase 5 (CDK5), a unique member of the CDK family, is a proline-directed serine/threonine protein kinase with critical roles in various physiological and pathological processes. Widely expressed in the central nervous system, CDK5 is strongly implicated in neurological diseases. Beyond its neurological roles, CDK5 is involved in metabolic disorders, psychiatric conditions, and tumor progression, contributing to processes such as proliferation, migration, immune evasion, genomic stability, and angiogenesis.
