Athelia rolfsii TEMG (MH 236106) an exopolysaccharide (EPS) producing fungal strain was isolated and identified. Extraction, purification, characterization, antimicrobial, antioxidant, antiviral and antitumor activities of the polysaccharide were investigated. It characterized as a homopolysaccharide of glucose with a molecular weight of 345.622 kDa. The identification of the polysaccharide was conducted using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray analysis, H and C NMR spectra. The existence of β-1,3 and β-1,6 linkages suggests that EPS could be scleroglucan. The purified scleroglucan showed considerable antibacterial and antioxidant activities. The results indicated that, there was no cytotoxicity on normal cell (W138) and no effect on tumor cell lines including HepG2 and PC3 showing IC50 of 5096.83, 5885.80 and 4803.90 μg/mL, respectively. The results showed also that Sclg could reduce the cytopathic effect by 50% (EC) at 15 and 50 μg/mL of herpes simplex virus type-1 (HSV-1) and influenza virus (H5N1), respectively.

Article Synopsis
  • - Badila (Saccharum officinarum) is a significant chewing cane in southern China, particularly affected by red rot disease, with infection rates reaching 60.2%-87.5% in fields of Yongning District during 2019-2020.
  • - The disease causes severe damage to the sugarcane by affecting the basal stem nodes and leading to decomposition of the stem's epidermis, resulting in sclerotium formation.
  • - Researchers confirmed the pathogenicity of the fungus responsible for red rot through careful inoculation of sugarcane plants, observing that inoculated plants exhibited symptoms while control plants remained unaffected.

Peanuts and corn are susceptible to various soil-borne fungi, leading to significant economic losses. Atoxigenic Aspergillus flavus have been widely used as biocontrol agents for managing aflatoxin contamination because of their minimal environmental impact, strong competitive ability, and sustained inhibition effect. After multiple identifications and cluster amplification pattern (CAP) analysis, three atoxigenic A.

Colonization compatibility with Bacillus altitudinis confers soybean seed rot resistance.

Department of Plant Pathology and Microbiology, National Taiwan University, Taipei City 10617, Taiwan.

The plant microbiome and plant-associated bacteria are known to support plant health, but there are limited studies on seed and seedling microbiome to reveal how seed-associated bacteria may confer disease resistance. In this study, the application of antibiotics on soybean seedlings indicated that seed-associated bacteria were involved in the seed rot resistance against a soil-borne pathogen Calonectria ilicicola, but this resistance cannot be carried to withstand root rot. Using PacBio 16S rRNA gene full-length sequencing and microbiome analyses, 14 amplicon sequence variants (ASVs) including 2 ASVs matching to Bacillus altitudinis were found to be more abundant in the four most resistant varieties versus the four most susceptible varieties.
