The muscular-deep fascial system: new findings on the anatomy of the structure attached to the superior orbital margin.

Sci Rep

September 2024

Department of Human Anatomy, Histology and Embryology, School of Basic Medical Sciences, Peking University, 38 Xueyuan Road, Haidian District, Beijing, 100191, China.

Article Synopsis
  • This study investigates the anatomy of the muscular-deep fascial system connecting the upper eyelid, brow, and glabella, areas previously lacking detailed research.
  • Researchers used eight embalmed cadavers for both gross anatomical dissections and histological tissue analysis to map the anatomy of the region between the eyebrow and superior orbital margin.
  • The findings reveal that the frontalis and orbicularis oculi muscles are interconnected through a layered deep fascia, which may improve techniques for soft-tissue surgeries in the facial region.

Objective: To compare the clinical outcomes and biomechanical characteristics of 1-, 2-, and 3-level pedicle subtraction osteotomy (PSO), and establish selection criteria based on preoperative radiographic parameters.

Methods: Patients undergone PSO to treat ankylosing spondylitis from February 2009 to May 2019 in Sun Yat-sen Memorial Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University were enrolled. According to the quantity of osteotomy performed, the participants were divided into group A (1-level PSO, n = 24), group B (2-level PSO, n = 19), and group C (3-level PSO, n = 11).

Sonographic evaluation of the fetal head position and attitude during labor.

Am J Obstet Gynecol

March 2024

Department of Medicine and Surgery, Obstetrics and Gynecology Unit, University of Parma, Parma, Italy.

Fetal malpresentation, malposition, and asynclitism are among the most common determinants of a protracted active phase of labor, arrest of dilatation during the first stage, and arrest of descent in the second stage. The diagnosis of these conditions is traditionally based on vaginal examination, which is subjective and poorly reproducible. Intrapartum sonography has been demonstrated to yield higher accuracy than vaginal examination in characterizing fetal malposition, and some guidelines endorse its use for the verification of the occiput position before performing an instrumental delivery.

Borate bioactive glasses have gained attention in recent years due to their therapeutic and regenerative effects in vivo. However, borate bioactive glasses release alkaline ions, increasing the local pH and creating a toxic environment for cell culture studies. A partial compositional substitution of phosphate for borate can create a pH-neutral glass that does not significantly affect the local pH while still releasing therapeutic ions.
