Aflatoxins (AFs) are potent carcinogens present in numerous crops. Access to accurate methods for evaluating contamination is a critical factor in aflatoxin risk assessment. Versicolorin A (Ver A), a precursor of aflatoxin B (AFB), can be used as an indicator for the presence of AFB, even when the AF is not yet detectable. Currently employed Ver A detection methods are expensive, time consuming, and difficult to apply to numerous samples. Herein, Ver A was detected via near-infrared spectroscopy. Both quantitative and two-grade sorting methods were set-up using the extreme gradient boosting algorithm coupled with a support vector machine. This two-tiered method obtained a root-mean-square error of prediction value of 3.57 μg/kg for the quantitative model, and an accuracy rate of 90.32% for the sorting approach. This novel method is rapid, accurate, solvent free, requires no sample pretreatment, and detects Ver A in maize, making it convenient for practical use.

Background: Intermittent hypoxia, a consequence of sleep-disordered breathing (SDB), may contribute to an increased risk of cognitive decline. However, the association between SDB and cognition remains highly variable.
Methods: Fifty-two community-dwelling healthy older adults (28 women) were recruited.

Backgrounds: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is widely used for the evaluation of mental workload (MWL), but it is not yet clear whether it is affected by physical factors during cognitive tasks. Therefore, the combined effects of physical and cognitive loads on hemodynamic features in the prefrontal cortex were evaluated.
Methods: Thirty-three eligible healthy male subjects were asked to perform three types of cognitive tasks (1-back, 2-back and 3-back).

Fiber is essential for rumen health, microbial fermentation, and the energy supply of herbivores. Even though the study of fecal fiber contents (neutral detergent fiber NDF, acid detergent fiber ADF, and acid detergent lignin ADL) using near-infrared reflectance spectroscopy (NIRS) has allowed investigating nutritional ecology of different herbivore species, NIRS calibrations are species-specific and require a large number of samples for predictions. A multispecies calibration would be an advantage since samples from different herbivores could be used to calibrate a model capable of predicting the fecal fiber content of other herbivores.

Stroke is a global health issue caused by reduced blood flow to the brain, which leads to severe motor disabilities. Measuring oxygen levels in the brain tissue is crucial for understanding the severity and evolution of stroke. While CT or fMRI scans are preferred for confirming a stroke due to their high sensitivity, Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (NIRS)-based systems could be an alternative for monitoring stroke evolution.

Objectives: The present prospective study aimed to compare near-infrared light reflection (NIRI) and bitewing radiographs (BWR) images to detect proximal caries in primary teeth.
Methods: 71 children underwent routine BWR, and scans were performed using an intra-oral scanner (iTero Element 5D, Align Technology, Tempe, AZ, USA), including a near-infrared light source (850 nm) and sensor. Five specialist pediatric dentists examined the NIRI and BWR images.
