In this work, we used quantum chemical methods and chemical kinetic models to answer the question of whether or not formaldehyde (CHO) and ammonia (NH) can be produced from gas phase hydration of methylenimine (CHNH). The potential energy surfaces (PESs) of CHNH + HO → CHO + NH and CHNH + 2HO → CHO + NH + HO reactions were computed using CCSD(T)/6-311++G(3d,3pd)//M06-2X/6-311++G(3d,3pd) level. The temperature-and pressure-dependent rate constants were calculated using variational transition state theory (VTST), microcanonical variational transition state theory [Formula: see text] and Rice-Ramsperger-Kassel-Marcus/master equation (RRKM/ME) simulations. The PES along the reaction path forming a weakly bound complex (CHNH⋯HO) was located using VTST and [Formula: see text]VTST, however, the PES along the tight transition state was characterized by VTST with small curvature tunneling (SCT) approach. The results show that the formation of CHNH + HO → CHNH⋯HO is pressure -and temperature-dependent. The calculated atmospheric lifetimes of CHNH⋯HO (~ 8 min) are too short to undergo secondary bimolecular reactions with other atmospheric species. Our results suggest that the formation of CHO and NH likely to occur in the combustion of biomass burning but the rate of formation CHO and NH is predicted to be negligible under atmospheric conditions. When a second water molecule is added to the reaction, the results suggest that the rates of formation of CHO and NH remain negligible.

Parkinson's disease (PD), a neurodegenerative disorder without cure, is characterized by the pathological aggregation of α-synuclein (α-Syn) in Lewy bodies. Classic deposition pathway and condensation pathway contribute to α-Syn aggregation, and liquid-liquid phase separation is the driving force for condensate formation, which subsequently undergo liquid-solid phase separation to form toxic fibrils. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a long history in treating neurodegenerative disease, herein; we identified chemicals from herbs that inhibit α-Syn aggregation.

Humans adjust their learning strategies in changing environments by estimating the volatility of the reinforcement conditions. Here, we examine how volatility affects learning and the underlying functional brain organizations using a probabilistic reward reversal learning task. We found that the order of states was critically important; participants adjusted learning rate going from volatile to stable, but not from stable to volatile, environments.

Functional regeneration of the lung's gas exchange surface following injury requires the coordination of a complex series of cell behaviors within the alveolar niche. Using single-cell transcriptomics combined with lineage tracing of proliferating progenitors, we examined mouse lung regeneration after influenza injury, demonstrating an asynchronously phased response across different cellular compartments. This longitudinal atlas of injury responses has produced a catalog of transient and persistent transcriptional alterations in cells as they transit across axes of differentiation.

ConspectusThe electronic properties of atomically thin van der Waals (vdW) materials can be precisely manipulated by vertically stacking them with a controlled offset (for example, a rotational offset─i.e., twist─between the layers, or a small difference in lattice constant) to generate moiré superlattices.

Non-precious transition metal-based electrocatalysts with high activities are promising candidates for substituting Pt- or Ru-based electrocatalysts in hydrogen evolution. In this study, we propose core-shell engineering to combine the amorphous NiCoP and crystalline CoP (a-NiCoP/CoP@NF), which requires an ultra-low overpotential of only 26 mV to achieve the benchmark current density of 10 mA cm. Furthermore, it achieves an industrial-level hydrogen evolution current density of 500 mA cm with excellent stability.
