Disulfidptosis is a recently identified form of cell death characterized by the aberrant accumulation of cellular disulfides. This process primarily occurs in glucose-starved cells expressing higher levels of SLC7A11 and has been proposed as a therapeutic strategy for cancers with hyperactive SCL7A11. However, the potential for inducing disulfidptosis through other mechanisms in cancers remains unclear.

Metabolites augment oxidative stress to sensitize antibiotic-tolerant to fluoroquinolones.

mBio

December 2024

Department of Molecular Biology and Biophysics, UConn Health, Farmington, Connecticut, USA.

Article Synopsis
  • Infections caused by antibiotic-resistant bacteria, along with persister cells that can survive treatment, are projected to lead to millions of deaths in the future if not addressed.
  • This study finds that adding glucose and amino acids to nutrient-deprived bacterial cultures enhances their sensitivity to fluoroquinolones, specifically delafloxacin, a recently approved antibiotic for staph infections.
  • The researchers discovered that nutrient stimulation increases the production of harmful reactive oxygen species (ROS), which significantly contributes to the enhanced effectiveness of the antibiotics, despite not directly affecting nucleic acid synthesis.

Introduction: During the early stage of pregnancy trophoblast cells adapt to adverse uterine environments characterized by oxygen and nutrient deprivation. Autophagy is an intracellular degradation process that aims to promote cell survival in response to stressful conditions. Autophagy activation passes through the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR), also known as a placental nutrient sensor.

Utilizing rare earth doped ceria in solid oxide cells (SOCs) engineering is indeed a strategy aimed at enhancing the electrochemical devices' durability and activity. Particularly, Gd-doped ceria (GDC) is actively used for barrier layer and catalytic additives in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, experiments are conducted with La-doped CeO (LDC), in which the Ce sites are predominantly occupied by La, to prevent the formation of the Ce-Zr solid solution.

Purpose: We explored the elicitation role of the laser irradiations on the alleviation of nutrient-deficiency induced damage in anthocyanin-producing red-fleshed apple cell suspension in continuous production of anthocyanin.

Methods: Anthocyanin-producing red-fleshed apple cells were irradiated by 4 intensity levels of red He-Ne (RHNL) and blue diode (BDL) lasers for 20 min.

Results: Nutrient deficiency indicated negative effect on total soluble proteins (TSP), superoxidase dismutase (SOD) activity, and total phenolics content (TPC) while it displayed a positive effect on malondialdehyde (MDA), total flavonoids content (TFC), O, HO and lipoxygenase (LOX) and polyphenol oxidase (PPO) activities in light controls, illustrating oxidative stress.
