We present English translations of two French documents to show that the main reason for the rejection of Semmelweis's theory of the cause of childbed (puerperal) fever was because his proof relied on the post hoc ergo propter hoc fallacy, and not because Joseph Skoda referred only to cadaveric particles as the cause in his lecture to the Academy of Science on Semmelweis's discovery. Friedrich Wieger (1821-1890), an obstetrician from Strasbourg, published an accurate account of Semmelweis's theory six months before Skoda's lecture, and reported a case in which the causative agent originated from a source other than cadavers. Wieger also presented data showing that chlorine hand disinfection reduced the annual maternal mortality rate from childbed fever (MMR) from more than 7 per cent for the years 1840-1846 to 1.27 per cent in 1848, the first full year in which chlorine hand disinfection was practised. But an editorial in the Gazette médicale de Paris rejected the data as proof of the effectiveness of chlorine hand disinfection, stating that the fact that the MMR fell after chlorine hand disinfection was implemented did not mean that this innovation had caused the MMR to fall. This previously unrecognized objection to Semmelweis's proof was also the reason why Semmelweis's chief rejected Semmelweis's evidence.

Orthopalladated derivatives from substituted phenylglycines [Pd(μ-Cl)(CHRC(R)(R)N(R)] () react with halogenating reagents (PhICl, Br, I) () to give the corresponding o-halogenated amino acids CH(X)RC(R)(R)N(R) (). The reaction is general and tolerates a variety of functional groups (R to R) at the aryl ring, the Cα, and the N atom. On the other hand, the reaction of [Pd(μ-Cl)(CHRC(R)(R)N(R)] () with PhI(OAc) in the presence of a variety of alcohols ROH () gives the o-alkoxylated phenylglycines CH(OR)RC(R)(R)N(R) (), also as a general process.

Due to the endocrine toxicity, neurotoxic, and reproductive toxicity to organisms, the sources and risks of brominated organic pollutants have attracted widespread attention. However, knowledge gaps remain in the bromination processes of emerging phenolic pollutants in plants, which may increase the potential health risk associated with food exposure. Our study discovered that light induced generation and accumulation of more toxic brominated organic compounds (Br-org) in lettuce leaves under the stress of acetaminophen (ACE) than that without light, as evidenced by an increase in C-Br bond intensity in FTIR analysis.

With the development of cities, the issue of excess nitrate in wastewater has become increasingly severe. Electrochemical technology has garnered significant attention due to its straightforward operation and environmental sustainability. A CoO/GF cathode was successfully prepared by depositing CoO onto Graphite felt (GF) using an electrochemical deposition-calcination method.

Swimming produces many psychophysiological effects, including blood, hormonal, enzymatic, pulmonary, cardiovascular and energetic adaptations. However, asthma and allergies are becoming increasingly prevalent medical issues among elite endurance-trained swimmers, where exercise-induced asthma or bronchospasm is frequently reported. Heavy endurance swimming training, especially under adverse conditions, stresses the airway mucosa, leading to inflammatory changes, as observed in induced sputum in competitive swimmers.

The Baltic Sea, a semi-enclosed marginal sea with a catchment area four times its size, acts as a sink and continues to show detectable levels of persistent organic pollutants (POPs) in its sediments. This is attributed to the synthesis and industrial use of commercial polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) products, as well as the widespread use and discharge of certain chlorinated pesticides into the natural environment during the last century. Our study investigates chlorinated hydrocarbon pollutants, the polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), dichlorodiphenyltrichloroethane (DDT) and its metabolites as well as hexachlorobenzene (HCB) in sediments based on several short sediment cores from different basins covering almost the entire Baltic Sea.
