There has recently been a renewed interest in the photochromic properties and uses of TiO as a potential candidate for smart windows. However, the surrounding medium of TiO nanoparticles (NPs) is of equal importance, as it facilitates hole scavenging and, in turn, photochromism. Here, we investigated the impact of scavenging power on the photochromic properties of TiO. TiO NP colloids in these solvents exhibit a photochromic response in a broad wavelength range from the visible to near-infrared region. We have shown that solvents such as ethanol have the best hole scavenging properties among the alcohols tested. The response can be further modified by the addition of a supplementary hole scavenger, such as hydroxylamine. The photochromism of TiO is fully reversible and could be used for applications in smart windows.

Aquatic biota and human health are seriously threatened by the dramatic rise in antibiotics in environmental matrices. In this regard, the present study aims to improve knowledge of the combined effects of heterojunction design and defect engineering on the photocatalytic degradation of pharmaceuticals in aqueous matrices. Advantageously, the positioning of the valence band (VB) and conduction band (CB) levels of S@g-CN, being higher than those of BiMoO, demonstrates the feasibility of forming a type-II heterojunction between these materials.

The study presents the fabrication and superior photoactivity of a ternary g-CN/FeVO/AgBr heterojunction nanocomposite, synthesized via a chemical precipitation method for effective degradation of tetracycline (TC) and Victoria Blue (VB) dye under light illumination. The morphology and the crystal size of the synthesized nanocomposite were characterized by using FESEM and XRD and the calculated grain size (100.39 nm) is larger than the crystal size (48.

Chemical transformations at metal oxide interfaces that are triggered by mechanical energy set the basis for applications in the fields of tribo- and mechanochemistry, ceramic and composite processing, and piezoelectric devices. We investigated the early stages of tribochemically initiated radical chemistry of structurally well-defined TiO and BaTiO nanoparticles in argon or in oxygen atmosphere. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy enabled the determination of the chemical nature and concentration of paramagnetic surface species which form upon uniaxial powder compaction at room temperature.

Photocatalytic reduction of uranyl ions (UO) is an environmentally friendly, energy efficient, and highly effective method for uranium-containing wastewater treatment and uranium recovery. Herein, a novel photocatalytic material CH-8 @NNFO-4 with abundant oxygen vacancies was synthesize by growing Ca(OH) on the surface of Fe doped NaNbO in situ. The Ca(OH) synergizes with the oxygen vacancies, creating a microenvironment that narrows the bandgap and extends the light response range.

Metallic nanoparticle photocatalysts have been developed in various catalytic systems over the past few decades, including diverse noble and non-noble metals with plasmonic properties. The hot-carrier-induced mechanism is one of the most appealing pathways as it can provide energetic electrons or holes for driving thermodynamically unfavorable reactions or increasing the reaction rate. In this work, we evaluate the photocatalytic performance of semimetallic bismuth nanoparticles and offer detailed mechanistic interpretations in terms of hot carriers and interband transitions.
