Endometriosis of the Bartholin gland: a case report and review of the literature.

Published: July 2020

Background: In this case report we present a case of endometriosis in the Bartholin gland without surgery in the perineal area. So far, only five cases concerning endometriosis in the Bartholin gland, which may or may not be an isolated finding, have been reported in the literature.

Case Presentation: A 31-year-old Indo-surinamese woman with primary infertility presented at our out-patient clinic with cyclical vulvar pain. On gynecological examination, a cyst of 1 × 2 cm was found in the right gland of Bartholin. A transvaginal ultrasound revealed normal gynecological anatomy and did not reveal any contributing information. Due to the recurring pain of the cyst, surgery was scheduled. During surgery, the marsupialization of the cyst resulted in drainage of a chocolate-colored fluid. Pathological examination revealed stroma lined with non-typical columnar epithelium with hemosiderin pigments, which confirmed a diagnosis of endometriosis in the Bartholin gland.

Conclusion: Our findings revealed a case of endometriosis outside the pelvis, without any deep intraperitoneal involvement. So far, only five cases concerning endometriosis in the Bartholin gland, which may or may not be an isolated finding, have been reported in literature.

Multimodality imaging of diseases of the vagina.

Department of Radiodiagnosis and Interventional Radiology, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi 110029, India.

Article Synopsis
  • Vaginal pathologies are significant causes of genital tract symptoms in women and are often overlooked with standard transabdominal ultrasonography; transperineal USG and MRI are preferred for detailed evaluation.
  • Conditions affecting different age groups include congenital anomalies in children and young adults, such as vaginal septum and atresia, while adults commonly experience benign lesions and malignant tumors, like squamous cell carcinoma.
  • Understanding imaging features of these vaginal diseases is essential for proper diagnosis and treatment planning, particularly after interventions like radiotherapy, which alters the vagina's morphology.

Identifying safe diagnostic algorithms for sentinel lymph node mapping in high-risk endometrial cancer: The SENTIREC-endo study.

Introduction: It is unclear if sentinel node (SLN) mapping can replace pelvic- (PLD) and paraaortic lymphadenectomy (PALD) for high-risk endometrial cancer (EC). A diagnostically safe surgical algorithm, taking failed mapping cases into account, is not defined. We aimed to investigate the diagnostic accuracy of SLN mapping algorithms in women with exclusively high-risk EC.

Psychological interventions improve quality of life despite persistent pain in endometriosis: results of a 3-armed randomized controlled trial.

Qual Life Res

June 2023

Department of Psychology and Behavioral Sciences, School of Business and Social Sciences, Aarhus University, 8000, Aarhus, Denmark.

Purpose: Despite standard medical treatment endometriosis is often associated with disabling pain and poor quality of life (QoL). Studies indicate that psychological interventions (PIs) may improve pain and QoL, yet studies on the effects of PIs for women with endometriosis are sparse and limited by low-quality study designs. Therefore, this study aimed, in a rigorous three-armed design, to evaluate the effect of PIs on chronic pelvic pain (CPP) and QoL in women with endometriosis.
