Background: This case series describes the use of the Medtronic Micro Vascular Plug (MVP) system in the treatment of acute massive orofacial hemorrhages in patients with cancer and trauma, resulting in successful hemostasis in these emergent cases.

Case Description: The first case describes a patient who presented with life-threatening oropharyngeal hemorrhage after a motor vehicle accident. In the second case, a patient with oropharyngeal cancer presented with life-threatening bleeding from an ulcerated tumor. Patients were successfully treated with a combination of MVP and coils. Immediate postprocedural imaging confirmed that homeostasis was achieved.

Conclusions: These cases demonstrate that the MVP as an embolic device is a valuable transarterial embolic treatment option in cases of acute orofacial bleeding where rapid, effective hemostasis is required.

The outbreak of COVID-19 swept massive masses causing rhinocerebral mucormycosis, a fatal mycotic infection, and high mortality among humans. It affects individuals with weakened immune systems, resulting in severe ulcers on the palate or perforation of the palate, accompanied by blackish necrotic tissue and exposure of underlying bone. Some of the key symptoms include rhinorrhea, facial swelling, pain in the orofacial region, varying degrees of fever, headaches, blurred vision due to proptosis, and involvement of the contents of the orbit.

Two-component regulatory system TCS08 of a serotype 4 strain in pneumococcal pneumonia pathogenesis.

Article Synopsis
  • Streptococcus pneumoniae causes serious respiratory diseases, and the two-component regulatory system (TCS) plays a key role in how it adapts and colonizes in different environments in the body.* -
  • Researchers created a mutant strain (Δhk08) to study the impact of TCS08 on colonization and pneumonia development in mice, showing that disruptions in this system increase bacterial presence and reduce survival.* -
  • The study found that TCS08 is vital for pneumococcal adaptation in the respiratory tract, influencing factors like capsule production and inflammation, which contribute to the severity of pneumonia.*

Utilising massive open online courses to enhance global learning dissemination in cleft lip and palate: a case report of penta helix collaboration.

BMC Med Educ

Division of Oral Health Sciences and WHO Collaborating Centre for Oral Health & Craniofacial Anomalies, University of Dundee, Dundee, Scotland, UK.

Background: Educating and raising awareness in cleft lip and palate future generations is one vital effort to ensure the improvement of cleft care and research in the future. This study reported the overview in organising and evaluating the Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) in Cleft Lip and Palate as the alternative way for students' capacity building outside their study program whilst also earning credits towards their studies.

Methods: Smile Train cleft charity generously donated recorded lectures from cleft experts around the world in which each of the experts agreed to provide one-hour live discussion sessions.

Herpes simplex viruses (HSV) are common human pathogens with a combined global seroprevalence of 90% in the adult population. HSV-1 causes orofacial herpes but can cause severe diseases, such as the potentially fatal herpes encephalitis and herpes keratitis, a prevalent cause of infectious blindness. The hallmark of HSV is lifelong latent infections and viral reactivations, leading to recurrent lesions or asymptomatic shedding.

Objectives: The 3-hydroxy-3-methyl-glutaryl-CoA reductase (HMGCR) is the enzyme controlling the rate-limiting step in the synthesis of cholesterol, sterols, and isoprenoids in the mevalonate biosynthetic pathway. Impaired function of HMGCR in zebrafish produces craniofacial malformations and orofacial cleft, mainly affecting the post-migratory neural crest cells with little earlier effect. Here we investigate morphogenetic and cellular mechanisms underlying the generation of these malformations.
