A cross-sectional analysis of characteristics possibly associated with congestive heart failure (CHF) was performed among 644 men, all 67 years of age and randomly selected from the general population. A total of 13% had symptoms and signs of overt CHF. Another 10% had early or "latent" CHF. Among overt CHF cases, 46% had hypertension, 55% coronary heart disease and 79% any one of these conditions. Among "latent" CHF cases, the corresponding proportions were 52%, 25% and 65%. Simple indices of left ventricular diastolic function and filling pressure as well as of pulmonary artery pressure were closer related to the CHF stage, than were measures of systolic left ventricular function. Smoking habits, hypertension, blood lipids, weight and other measures of body fat, blood glucose, and serum insulin were all correlated to CHF stage. In a multivariate analysis, smoking habits, hypertension, body weight, and serum insulin were independently and significantly correlated to CHF stage.

Background: End-Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) is an independent risk factor in outcomes for traditional coronary artery bypass grafting (TRAD-CAB) utilizing aortic cross-clamping and cardioplegic arrest. In order to determine if Beating-Heart CABG (BH-CABG) techniques offer benefit in patients with ESRD, an analysis of the Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) predicted risk versus the actual outcomes was performed.
Methods: Between March 2017 - October 2023, all ESRD patients underwent BH-CABG by a single surgeon at a single institution.

Background: Anthracycline-taxane chemotherapy is the gold standard in high-risk breast cancer (BC), despite the potential risk of congestive heart failure (CHF). A suitable alternative for anthracycline-sparing chemotherapy is through the combination of docetaxel and cyclophosphamide (TC).
Methods: Through a retrospective study of stage I-III HER2-negative BC, using administrative databases, we analyzed a total of 10,634 women treated with adjuvant chemotherapy in Ontario, Canada, between 2009 and 2017.

Background: Left Ventricular Assist Device (LVAD) implantation is an important treatment option for patients with advanced CHF. Referral to an early, intensive cardiac rehabilitation (CR) program in these patients seems still underused. This observational descriptive study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of an early intensive CR program in LVAD recipients, also comparing results with a matched group of advanced HFrEF patients.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFChronic heart failure (CHF) represents one of the most severe and advanced stages of cardiovascular disease. Despite the critical importance of cardiac rehabilitation (CR) in CHF management, while studies have explored the effectiveness of various CR delivery modes and offered valuable context-specific insights, their relative efficacy remains inconsistent across different patient groups, healthcare environments, and intervention approaches. A clearer understanding requires comprehensive comparisons and in-depth analyses to address these variations.

Despite increased availability of effective drug therapy for treatment of heart failure (HF), the morbidity and mortality in chronic heart failure (CHF) are unacceptably high. Therefore, there is an urgent need to ascertain new imaging techniques to identify early sub-clinical forms of cardiac dysfunctions, to guide early relevant treatment. It seems that all the behavioral risk factors-such as tobacco, alcoholism, Western-type diet, sedentary behavior and obesity, emotional disorders, and sleep disorder are associated with early cardiac dysfunction, which may be identified by speckle-tracking echocardiography (STE).
