Culicoides biting midges (Diptera: Ceratopogonidae) have been reported as potential vectors for haemoparasites. Information about host-vector-parasite specificity is required to confirm their status. Here, molecular detection of haemosporidians, Leishmania, trypanosomatids, and filarial nematodes in biting midges was conducted to understand their potential role as vectors, and their host preference was determined.

There are multiple bioactive substances in the mosquito saliva, most of which are allergic to humans. Previous studies have demonstrated that mosquito bites may induce allergic reactions mediated by B and T lymphocytes, resulting in a reduction in the quality of life and even death among patients. To date, 11 salivary allergens and 8 non-salivary allergens have been characterized in mosquitoes.

Ticks are an increasingly important threat to public health in Southeast Asia, due to the role of many tick species as parasites of humans and as vectors of zoonotic pathogens. Singapore is a densely populated Southeast Asian nation with a rich tick fauna and a significant mosaic of city and greenspace. However, apart from occasional case reports, the human-biting ticks in Singapore have received little attention from researchers.
