Penile acquisition of HIV accounts for most infections among men globally. Nevertheless, candidate HIV interventions for men advance to clinical trials without preclinical efficacy data, due primarily to a paucity of relevant animal models of penile HIV infection. Using our recently developed macaque model, we show that a single subcutaneous administration of broadly neutralizing antibody (bNAb) 10-1074 conferred durable protection against repeated penile exposures to simian-human immunodeficiency virus (SHIV). Macaques co-administered bNAbs 10-1074 and 3BNC117, or 3BNC117 alone, also exhibited significant protection against repeated vaginal SHIV exposures. Regression modeling estimated that individual plasma bNAb concentrations of 5 μg ml correlated with ≥99.9% relative reduction in SHIV infection probability via penile (10-1074) or vaginal (10-1074 or 3BNC117) challenge routes. These results demonstrate that comparably large reductions in penile and vaginal SHIV infection risk among macaques were achieved at clinically relevant plasma bNAb concentrations and inform dose selection for the development of bNAbs as long-acting pre-exposure prophylaxis candidates for use by men and women.

Whether the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K are associated with development of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) after allogeneic stem cell transplantation, is unclear. We assessed if the levels of these vitamins were associated with development of GvHD during the first year after transplantation using data from a two-armed randomized nutritional intervention trial. Changes in plasma levels during 1-year follow-up were analyzed using a linear mixed model for repeated measurements.

Pitting corrosion caused by sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) significantly shortens the lifespan of metallic pipelines. Antibacterial coatings containing S-responsive drug-loaded nanocontainers represent a promising method to mitigate SRB corrosion. However, the challenge of balancing rapid bactericide release with continuous antibacterial effect limits their practical application.

This study introduces an innovative electrochemical biosensor, engineered through the functionalization screen-printed electrode (SPE) with a coordination complex comprised of 4-mercaptobenzoic acid (4-MBA) and copper ions (Cu), achieving precise quantitative determination of glyphosate. Electrodepositing gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) onto the electrode surface, forming a self-assembled monolayer (SAM) of 4-MBA via thiol-gold interactions, and immobilizing Cu via coordination bonding with the monolayer, finalizing the electrochemical biosensor construction as Cu/4-MBA/AuNPs/SPE. The successful modification of the biosensor interface is confirmed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and electrochemical characterization.

Riverine flooding is increasing in frequency and intensity, requiring river management agencies to consider new approaches to working with communities on flood mitigation planning. Communication and information sharing between agencies and communities is complex, and mistrust and misinformation arise quickly when communities perceive that they are excluded from planning. Subsequently, riverfront community members create narratives that can be examined as truth regimes-truths created and repeated that indicate how flooding and its causes are understood, represented, and discussed within their communities-to explain why flooding occurs in their area.

In liquid crystal (LC) cells, the surface patterning directs the self-assembly of the uniaxial building blocks in the bulk, enabling the design of stimuli-response optical devices with various functionalities. The combination of different anchoring patterns at both substrates can lead to surface induced frustration, preventing a purely planar and defect-free configuration. In cells with crossed assembly of rotating anchoring patterns, elastic deformations allow to obtain a defect-free bulk configuration, but an electrical stimulus can induce disclination lines.
