Septic arthritis in a patient after tonsillectomy.

Tonsillectomy is a common and relatively safe pediatric surgery. However, common and emergent complications from this procedure include hemorrhage, airway obstruction, and local infection. A rare but equally emergent complication is infection from hematogenous spread. We present a rare case of septic arthritis in a 6-year-old female of the ankle 3 days following tonsillectomy.

Although these infections decreased during the COVID-19 pandemic, some countries have observed an increased number of invasive GAS (iGAS) diseases in recent years. We conducted an exploratory study of plasma microbial cell-free DNA sequencing for the diagnosis of Lyme disease among pediatric patients. Low levels of Borrelia burgdorferi microbial cell-free DNA (<3-5 molecules per microliter) were observed in 6/9 serologically confirmed participants, including 4/5 with arthritis and 2/3 with multiple erythema migrans.
