Published: July 2020

Objective: The aim of the study was to determine outcome measures that women with vulvar lichen sclerosus (LS) rate as important in assessing disease severity with the ultimate goal of including these items in a disease severity rating tool.

Methods: An online survey of women older than 18 years with a diagnosis of vulvar LS was performed. The survey was posted in Facebook LS support groups. Participants rated items on a scale from 1 to 5 (not important to include to essential to include) in a disease severity scale. Participants also rated how often they were affected by various symptoms on a scale from 1 to 5 (never to daily). Mean rating of importance and mean rating of frequency for each sign and symptom were calculated. T tests were used to compare patients with biopsy-proven disease with those with a clinical diagnosis of LS.

Results: Nine hundred fifty-eight participants completed the survey (86% completion rate). Patients felt that the most important items to assess disease severity were irritation (4.39), fusion of the labia (4.38), soreness (4.37), itch (4.34), change in vulvar skin (4.34), and decrease in quality of life (4.33). The most frequently experienced items by those with LS were irritation (3.92), changes in appearance of vulvar skin (3.92), and discomfort (3.89). There were no differences between patients with biopsy-proven LS versus those diagnosed on clinical examination.

Conclusions: Future LS severity assessment tools will need to include a combination of patient-rated symptoms, clinical rated signs and anatomical changes, and quality of life measures.

Background: Dexamethasone has proven life-saving in severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and COVID-19 cases. However, its systemic administration is accompanied by serious side effects. Inhalation delivery of dexamethasone (Dex) faces challenges such as low lung deposition, brief residence in the respiratory tract, and the pulmonary mucus barrier, limiting its clinical use.

Acute Q Fever after Kidney Transplantation: A Case Report.

Br J Hosp Med (Lond)

January 2025

Department of Rheumatism and Immunity, Beijing Tsinghua Changgung Hospital, School of Clinical Medicine, Tsinghua University, Beijing, China.

Patients receiving kidney transplant experience immunosuppression, which increases the risk of bacterial, viral, fungal, and parasitic infections. Q fever is a potentially fatal infectious disease that affects immunocompromised renal transplant recipients and has implications in terms of severe consequences for the donor's kidney. A patient with acute Q fever infection following kidney transplantation was admitted to the Tsinghua Changgung Hospital in Beijing, China, in March 2021.

The burdens of cardiovascular (CV) diseases and cardiotoxic side effects of cancer treatment in oncology patients are increasing in parallel. The European Society of Cardiology (ESC) 2022 Cardio-Oncology guidelines recommend the use of standardized risk stratification tools to determine the risk of cardiotoxicity associated with different anticancer treatment modalities and the severity of their complications. The use of the Heart Failure Association-International Cardio-Oncology Society (HFA-ICOS) is essential for assessing risk prior to starting cancer treatment, and validation of these methods has been performed in patients receiving anthracyclines, human epidermal receptor 2 (HER2)-targeted therapies and breakpoint cluster region-abelson oncogene locus (BCR-ABL) inhibitors.

The relationship between retinal fundus hemorrhage and the severity of coronary artery lesions remains unclear. This study aimed to explore the incidence of fundus hemorrhage in patients at high risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and to examine its correlation with the SYNTAX score, a tool used to assess the complexity of coronary artery disease. This retrospective study consecutively enrolled patients undergoing coronary angiography (CAG) at Beijing Anzhen Hospital Hospital from June 2019 to January 2020.
