Published: October 2020

This letter addresses the challenges for the dental radiology clinic in times of the COVID-19 pandemic. It highlights the use of teleradiography and mobile devices, as well as the proper care in disinfecting these equipments. As there are still no specific therapies for COVID-19, biosafety measures that promote containment and prevent the spread of the virus are crucial to stop the outbreak and control a possible new infectious peak.

Background/purpose: Bone reconstruction in the maxillofacial region typically relies on autologous bone grafting, which presents challenges, including donor site complications and graft limitations. Recent advances in tissue engineering have identified highly pure and proliferative dedifferentiated fat cells (DFATs) as promising alternatives. Herein, we explored the capacity for osteoblast differentiation and the osteoinductive characteristics of extracellular vesicles derived from DFATs (DFAT-EVs).

Background/purpose: Peri-implantitis remains a substantial challenge. This study investigated the effect of titanium particles on human oral epithelial cells, focusing on the nucleotide-binding domain and leucine-rich repeat protein (NLRP) 3 inflammasome.

Materials And Methods: The Ca9-22 human gingival epithelial cell line was subjected to incubation with titanium particles.

Background/purpose: Identifying crestal bone level (CBL) on the buccal and lingual aspects poses challenges in conventional dental radiographs. Given that optical coherence tomography (OCT) has the capability to non-invasively provide in-depth information about the periodontium, this in vitro study aimed to assess whether OCT can effectively identify periodontal landmarks and measure CBL in the presence of gingiva.

Materials And Methods: An in-house handheld scanning probe connected to a 1310-nm swept-source OCT (SS-OCT) system, along with self-developed algorithms were employed to measure the CBL in dental models with artificial gingiva.

Background/purpose: The obturation of canals with irregular structures is still a challenge for single cone obturation technique (SC). The purpose of this study was to evaluate the presence and distribution of voids using SC with different sealer placement methods in the canal with a simulated band-shaped isthmus.

Materials And Methods: 3D-printed root canal models with band-shaped isthmuses were randomly divided into four groups according to different obturation methods.

Biomineralization reaction from nanosized calcium silicate: A new method for reducing dentin hypersensitivity.

J Dent Sci

January 2025

Department of Conservative Dentistry, School of Dentistry and Dental Research Institute, Seoul National University, Seoul, Republic of Korea.

Background/purpose: This study assessed the ability of experimental materials consisting of dicalcium silicate (DCS) and tricalcium silicate (TCS) with nanosized particles to form intratubular crystals under phosphate-buffered saline (PBS) and the effect on dentin permeability reduction.

Materials And Methods: By isolating the cervical part of the extracted premolars, 195 specimens were obtained. Two experimental materials (DCS/TCS and TCS) were applied to the dentin surface by brushing and stored in PBS (n = 65).
