Published: June 2020

Objective: To determine management of pediatric ovarian masses and identify the factors associated with ovarian preservation.

Methods: From January, 2002 to January, 2019 the case records of 72 patients (median age 14 y), who underwent surgery for ovarian tumors were retrospectively reviewed.

Results: Tumors were most common in the age group 14-17 yrs (58.3%) and most (91.7%) were benign. The most common presenting symptom was abdominal pain (80.5%) followed by vomiting, elevated body temperature, nausea and palpable abdominal mass. 25 (34.7%) patients had an ovarian torsion. Six out of 72 (8.3%) patients had malignant tumors. Of the patients with malignant tumors, 75% had abnormal alpha-fetoprotein and 50% had abnormal b-human chorionic gonadotropin levels (P<0.001). Ovarian-preserving surgery was successfully performed in 74.3% of the benign lesions and two patients (25%) with malignant tumors (P=0.004).

Conclusion: Factors associated with ovarian-preserving surgery are benign tumor, normal tumor markers levels, and smaller size of tumor.

5-Fluorouracil (5-FU) is a chemotherapeutic that is used to treat solid tumors. However, 5-FU is associated with several side effects, including cardiotoxicity. Considering the importance of the intrinsic cardiac nervous system (ICNS) for the heart and that little is known about effects of 5-FU on this nervous system plexus, the purpose of the present study was to evaluate effects 5-FU at a low dose on the ICNS and oxidative and inflammatory effects in the heart in Wistar rats.

18F-Sodium Fluoride PET/CT as a Tool to Assess Enthesopathies in X-Linked Hypophosphatemia.

Calcif Tissue Int

January 2025

Endocrinology Department, School of Medicine, Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Av. Diagonal Paraguay 262, Cuarto Piso, Santiago, Chile.

X-linked hypophosphatemia (XLH) is a rare metabolic disorder characterized by elevated FGF23 and chronic hypophosphatemia, leading to impaired skeletal mineralization and enthesopathies that are associated with pain, stiffness, and diminished quality of life. The natural history of enthesopathies in XLH remains poorly defined, partly due to absence of a sensitive quantitative tool for assessment and monitoring. This study investigates the utility of 18F-NaF PET/CT scans in characterizing enthesopathies in XLH subjects.

The National Alliance to Advance Adolescent Health/Got Transition, Washington, D.C.

Purpose: There is a paucity of evidence examining clinician experiences with structured health-care transition (HCT) programs. Among HCT Learning Collaborative participants, this study describes clinician experiences with implementation of a structured HCT process: Got Transition's 6 Core Elements.

Methods: Representative members from 6 health systems designed a survey to collect clinician feedback regarding HCT and demographic and practice information.
