Utilizing organisms as sources of fluorophores relieves the demand for petroleum feedstock in organic synthesis of fluorescent products, and endophytic fungi provide a promising vein for natural fluorescent products. We report the characterization of a pH-responsive fluorophore from an endophytic fungus isolated from sand pine. The endogenous fluorescence of the live organism was measured using fluorescence microscopy. Computational interpretation of the spectra was accomplished with time-dependent density functional theory methods. The combined use of experimental and theoretically predicted spectra revealed the pH equilibria and photoexcited tautomerization of the natural product, 5-methylmellein. This product shows promise both as a stand-alone pH-indicating fluorophore, with alkaline pK , and as "green" feedstock for synthesis of custom fluorophores.

The mango cultivar 'Apple' is commercially important in Kenya but highly susceptible to russeting. Russeting refers to an area of fruit skin where the primary (epidermal) surface has been replaced by a secondary (peridermal) surface. The objective was to establish histologies, gene expressions and chemical compositions of a natural periderm, a wound-induced periderm and of cuticles of an un-russeted skin.

Biostimulants are an emerging and innovative class of products that may mitigate the adverse effects of extreme heat, but research on their efficacy in fruit crops is limited. This study addressed this knowledge gap by evaluating the performance of three biostimulants, FRUIT ARMOR™, Optysil®, and KelpXpress™ [active ingredients glycine betaine, silicon, and kelp (Ascophyllum nodosum) extract, respectively] applied to three raspberry genotypes exposed to high temperatures (T ≥ 35 °C/day) inside a glasshouse. 'Meeker' consistently maintained high chlorophyll fluorescence (F/F) and photosynthesis under control and biostimulant treatments.

In this study, polyethylene glycol 200 (PEG200) was employed as hydrogen bond acceptor, while organic acids served as hydrogen bond donors, to formulate poly-deep eutectic solvents (PDESs), which were utilized to pretreat tea stem. Specially, combining PEG200 and oxalic acid (OA) exhibited a notably high cellulose retention (82.03 %) and most efficient hemicellulose (97.

The self-assembly of rice glutelin (RG) into RG fibrils (RGFs) represents a promising strategy for enhancing its functional properties. In this study, we investigated the effects of ultrasonic pretreatment on the fibrillation kinetics, structural characteristics, and functional properties of RGFs. The results indicated that ultrasonic pretreatment facilitated the unfolding of RG, resulting in an increased H and β-sheet, thereby accelerating the formation of RGFs and enhancing the fibril conversion rate.
