Akilbenza clay (Akil) was characterized by XRD, FT-TIR, XRF, EDX, SEM, and N gas adsorption. The adsorption performance for Cu(II) ions by this clay was also studied. Akil is composed mainly of kaolinite with mica illite and quartz as minor minerals. The ATR-FTIR analysis shows Si-O-Al, Si-O, Al-O, Si-OH, and Al-OH as the main functional groups. SEM indicates that the clay particles are irregular in shape and size by supported BJH. Akil has a specific surface area of 45.62 m/g with the presence of both mesopores and micropores. The average pore diameter is 19.4196 nm. XRF and EDX reveal that the clay is mainly composed of silica, aluminum, and iron with a Si/Al ratio of 1.41. For the adsorption performance of Cu(II) ions, a maximum quantity of 76 mg/g was recorded. Freundlich isotherm models best describe the adsorption processes at equilibrium. Kinetic studies revealed that the adsorption process was well explained with pseudo-second-order kinetic model. The value of the mean energy of adsorption from Temkin isotherm and the values from Elovich kinetic model suggest that the adsorption of Copper(II) ions on Akil is a combination between ion exchange and electrostatic attraction. The results obtained can be introduced into the database of knowledge on clay minerals with emphasis on their use for the removal of Cu(II) ions.

A novel nanocomposite magnetic hydrogel was synthesized based on κ-carrageenan, acrylic acid, and activated carbon as an absorbent for removing heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. FT-IR spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and vibration sample magnetometer (VSM) were employed to confirm the structure of the nanocomposite hydrogels. The effects of contact time, pH, particle size, temperature, and metal ion concentration on the metal ion adsorption were investigated.

A microanalytical technique based on the photothermal effect in conjunction with back-scattering interferometry (BSI) using a single laser beam was developed for quantitative detection of heavy metals. After the chromogenic reaction of an analyte in a capillary tube, the photothermal effect induced by irradiation with the same laser beam leads to a change of the refractive index of the solution, which can be "quantified" using the BSI technique. For prove-of-concept, Cu(II) was chosen as the trial analyte, for which the solution changes to purplish through reacting with the chromogenic reagent; a single laser beam of 532 nm was adapted for both inducing the photothermal effect and realizing BSI detection.

The Schiff base metal complexes containing the transition metal ions Co(II), Ni(II) and Cu(II) were synthesized using their nitrate and acetate salts. An octahedral environment encircling metal complexes has been demonstrated by the findings of multiple spectroscopic approaches that were employed to demonstrate the structure of the metal complexes. The Coats-Redfern method of thermal analysis was employed to carry out the kinetic and thermodynamic calculations.

This study investigates the mechanism of prototropic tautomerization in metal-bound asymmetric pyrazole (R-PzH) ligands during Cu(II)-mediated PzH-MeCN coupling reactions. Intrinsic prototropic tautomerization of metal-bound ligands has not been previously documented. Various new bis-pyrazolylamidino Cu(II) complexes, [Cu(R-Pz(HNC(Me)))(ClO)], from the coupling reaction, and tetrakis pyrazole Cu(II) complexes, [Cu(R-PzH)(ClO)], with symmetric and asymmetric -monosubstituted R-PzH ligands were synthesized and characterized.

Heavy metal and nitrogen contaminations are serious concerns in aquatic environments. Marichromatium gracile YL28, a marine purple sulfur bacterium, has shown great potential as a bioremediation agent for removing inorganic nitrogen from marine water. This study further investigated its ability to simultaneously absorb heavy metals, including Pb(II), Cu(II), Cd(II) and Cr(VI), and remove inorganic nitrogen.
