Background: The localization of small pulmonary nodules (SPNs) during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) is challenging thoracic surgeon, especially in patients with severe pleural adhesion or visceral pleura pigmentation due to low success rate and future conversion to thoracotomy. This study aims to compare the efficacy and safety between modified microcoil and methylene blue in preoperative localization of small nodules, particularly patients with severe pleural adhesion or visceral pleura pigmentation.

Materials And Methods: From January 2018 to February 2019 in our institute, 342 patients who underwent computed tomography-guided localization of SPN were recruited in this retrospective cohort study and divided into the modified microcoil group ( = 239) and the methylene blue group ( = 103) according to the localization method. Clinical characteristics and perioperative complications were collected to analyze.

Results: All SPNs were successfully marked in both groups. Location-related complications, the duration of localization procedure, and the length of hospital stay were not different between the two groups. The operation time of modified microcoil and the duration of removal of nodule in operation were both shorter than the methylene blue ( = 0.014 and  = 0.047). The analysis stratified by gender showed that similar results were found in male patients ( = 0.01 and  = 0.00), while in female patients, no significant difference was found. Additionally, in senior patients (older than 60 years), the operation time in modified microcoil groups was less than methylene blue group ( = 0.024).

Conclusion: Compared with methylene blue, modified microcoil achieved a shorter operation time of removal of nodule in VATS, especially for patients with pleural adhesion and the pigmentation of the lung surface as well as the male patients and the patients older than 60 years.

Cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD) is a major cause of vascular cognitive impairment and functional loss in elderly patients. Progressive remodeling of cerebral microvessels due to arterial hypertension or other vascular risk factors, such as aging, can cause dementia or stroke. Typical imaging characteristics of CSVD include cerebral microbleeds (CMB), brain atrophy, small subcortical infarctions, white matter hyperintensities (WMH), and enlarged perivascular spaces (EPVS).

Scalable micro graphene Hall sensors (μGHSs) hold tremendous potential for highly sensitive and label-free biomagnetic sensing in physiological solutions. To enhance the performance of these devices, it is crucial to optimize frequency-dependent flicker noise to reduce the limit of detection (LOD), but it remains a great challenge due to the large contact resistance at the graphene-metal contact. Here we present a surface modification strategy employing persistent carbene on gold electrodes to reduce the contact resistivity by a factor of 25, greatly diminishing μGHS flicker noise by a factor of 1000 to 3.

The development of electromagnetic wave absorbers operating in the sub-terahertz (sub-THz) region is necessary in 6G communications. We designed and fabricated a sub-THz metamaterial absorber based on metal microcoils embedded and periodically arranged in a dielectric substrate. The microcoil parameters were optimized by calculating the electromagnetic response of the metamaterial using finite element analysis.

Purpose: We investigated the long-term safety and efficacy of hepatic transarterial embolization (TAE) in patients with symptomatic polycystic liver disease (PLD). Materials and Methods: A total of 26 patients were included, mean age of 52.3 years (range: 33−78 years), undergoing 32 TAE procedures between January 2012 and December 2019 were included in this retrospective study.

Department of Neurology, Zhongshan Hospital Fudan University, Shanghai, China

Background: Vascular cognitive impairment (VCI) is the second-leading cause of dementia worldwide, which is caused by cerebrovascular diseases or relevant risk factors. However, there are no appropriate animal models, which can be used to study changes of neuropathology in the human VCI. To better understand the development of VCI, we modified three mouse models of chronical vascular diseases, and further compared the advantage and disadvantage of these models.
