This paper reports a general electrospinning method to prepare various metal phosphide/carbon nanofibers composite for electrochemical hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) catalysts. An earth-abundant organic acid-phytic acid is successfully incorporated into a conventional electrospinning precursor as the phosphorus source, and continuous nanofibers can be obtained through spinning. After heat treatment, metal phosphide/carbon composite nanofibers can be obtained, with fine phosphide nanoparticles well dispersed on the surface of an interconnected carbon backbone network. Such fibrous structures offer fast charge transfer pathways and enlarged active surface area, which are beneficial for electrocatalysts. As a result, enhance HER catalytic activity can be achieved.

Article Synopsis
  • The alkaline oxygen evolution reaction (OER) involves four key reactions and poses challenges in balancing Gibbs free energies of intermediates like HO*, O*, and HOO* at active sites.
  • A new high-entropy metal-organic framework using Fe, Ni, Co, Cu, and Y is developed via electrodeposition, resulting in the FeCoNiCuYP/C composite, which features an amorphous structure with several active sites.
  • This composite shows enhanced OER performance in alkaline solutions, with a low overpotential of 316 mV at 100 mA/cm², attributed to the optimized electronic structure and binding strengths facilitated by Co/Ni and Fe atom interactions.

Although great progress has been made with respect to electron bridges, the electron mobility of the state-of-the-art electron bridges is far from satisfactory because of weak electrical conductivity. To overcome the above issue, cobalt phosphide (CoP), as a model electron bridge, was modified by superficial oxygen vacancies (OVs) and embedded into a defective bismuth oxychloride/carbon nitride (BiOCl/g-CN) Z-scheme heterojunction to obtain atomic-level insights into the effect of surface OVs on CoP electron bridges. Compared to BiOCl/g-CN and bismuth oxychloride/cobalt phosphide/carbon nitride (BiOCl/CoP/g-CN) composites, the defective bismuth oxychloride/cobalt phosphide/carbon nitride (BiOCl/CoP/g-CN) heterojunction exhibited remarkable photocatalytic redox performance, indicating that the surface OVs-assisted CoP electron bridge effectively boosted electrical conductivity and yielded ultrafast electron transfer rates.

Supercapacitors (SCs) are widely used in energy storage devices due to their superior power density and long cycle lifetime. However, the limited energy densities of SCs hinder their industrial application to a great extent. In this study, we present a new combination of metallic phosphide-carbon composites, synthesized by directly carbonizing (NiCo)TiO nanowires via thermal chemical vapor deposition (TCVD) technology.

Peroxymonosulfate (PMS) activation-based advanced oxidation technology possesses great potential for antibiotic-containing wastewater treatment. Herein, we developed an iron phosphide/carbon composite and verified its capability and superiority towards a model antibiotic pollutant (sulfathiazole, STZ) degradation through PMS activation. Benefiting from the chelating ability of phytic acid (PA) with metal ions and its abundance on phosphorous element, a PA-Fe complex was firstly formed and then served as sole precursor for iron phosphide formation by anoxic pyrolysis.
