Exercising Immunity: Interleukin-13 Flexes Muscle. | LitMetric

Exercising Immunity: Interleukin-13 Flexes Muscle.

Immunity

Department of Immunology, University of Washington, Seattle, WA, USA. Electronic address:

Published: June 2020

Endurance exercise drives physiological changes in the muscle to optimize performance. In a recent study in Science, Knudsen et al. report a role for the type 2 cytokine interleukin-13 in orchestrating metabolic reprogramming that drives adaptation to endurance exercise.

Background: Endurance athletes' competitions have increased over the decades and marathon races are becoming increasingly popular. Proper nutrition is critical for optimal performance and long-term health in marathon athletes. This study aimed to investigate runners' nutritional intake, especially fluids, food, and supplements, competing in the Seville Marathon.

Inhaled menthol for dyspnea relief during cycle exercise in COPD: a randomized trial.

Chest

March 2025

Research Group for Rehabilitation in Internal Disorders, Department of Rehabilitation Sciences, KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium; Laboratory of Respiratory Diseases and Thoracic Surgery (BREATHE), Department of Chronic Diseases and Metabolism (CHROMETA), KU Leuven, Leuven, Belgium. Electronic address:

Background: Menthol inhalation (MI) lowers dyspnea ratings during loaded breathing in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and cycle exercise in healthy adults. Proposed mechanisms include stimulation of cold receptors in the upper airways, modulating perception of breathing-related effort and airflow.

Research Question: Does MI also alleviate exertional dyspnea in COPD?

Study Design And Methods: Twenty COPD patients (60% male, 68±6 years, FEV=47±17 %predicted) completed 2 constant-load cycle exercise tests (73±7 %peak power output) to exhaustion with menthol or placebo (strawberry flavoring) added to the breathing circuit in counter-balanced order and on separate days.

Dietary timing enhances exercise by modulating fat-muscle crosstalk via adipocyte AMPKα2 signaling.

Electronic address:

Feeding rhythms regulate exercise performance and muscle energy metabolism. However, the mechanisms regulating adipocyte functions remain unclear. Here, using multi-omics analyses, involving (phospho-)proteomics and lipidomics, we found that day-restricted feeding (DRF) regulates diurnal rhythms of the mitochondrial proteome, neutral lipidome, and nutrient-sensing pathways in mouse gonadal white adipose tissue (GWAT).

Background: Endurance exercise intensities can be categorized into moderate, heavy, and severe domains based on physiological responses during incremental exercise testing. Since the evaluation of metabolic thresholds is not always possible, this study assessed the accuracy of fixed intensity anchors to estimate lactate thresholds.

Methods: 165 (64 females, 101 males) recreational runners performed a maximal incremental treadmill test.

Pacing has been investigated in different running races, including ultra-marathons. We have, however, little knowledge about pacing in ultra-trail running. To date, no study has investigated pacing in one of the most iconic ultra-trail running races, the 'Western States 100-Mile Endurance Run' (WSER), which covers 160 km (100 miles) and includes significant elevation changes (6000 vertical meters uphill and 7500 vertical meters downhill).
