The emergence of pandrug-resistant (PDR) and extensive drug-resistant (XDR) methicillin-resistant and vancomycin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA and VRSA) isolates from bovine milk samples along with biofilm formation ability and harboring various virulence genes complicates the treatment of bovine mastitis and highlights the serious threat to public health. This study investigated for the first time the frequency, antimicrobial resistance profiles, biofilm-forming ability, virulence factors, spa and staphylococcal cassette chromosome mec (SCCmec) types of MRSA and VRSA isolated from clinical and subclinical bovine mastitis in Egypt. A total of 808 milk samples were collected from each quarter of 202 dairy animals, including 31 buffaloes and 171 cattle.

Genetic diversity, drug resistance, and biofilm formation in Klebsiella pneumoniae associated with nosocomial infection in Pelotas, RS, Brazil.

Braz J Microbiol

December 2024

Programa de Pós-Graduação Em Biotecnologia (PPGB), Universidade Federal de Pelotas, UFPel, Pelotas, RS, Brazil.

Article Synopsis
  • - The study investigates antibiotic resistance and biofilm formation in Klebsiella pneumoniae strains from a university hospital in Pelotas, Brazil, highlighting the strains' persistence in hospital settings.
  • - Out of 28 K. pneumoniae isolates, a significant majority (96.42%) strongly formed biofilms, with 64.29% classified as multidrug-resistant (MDR), revealing a concerning level of antibiotic resistance.
  • - Genetic analysis showed 18 unique clones, indicating that the same strains circulated in different samples over two years, underscoring the need for improved control measures and disinfection protocols in hospital environments.

Background: Colistin resistance significantly constrains available treatment options and results in the emergence of pandrug-resistant (PDR) strains. Treating PDR infections is a major public health issue. A promising solution lies in using colistin-based combinations.

Background: An important chance of nosocomial acquired infections are caused by the opportunistic bacterium Klebsiella pneumoniae. Urine, wound, sputum, and blood samples were collected from all patients. This study aimed to detect the antibiotic resistance profile, the frequency of MDR, XDR, PDR, and detection of efflux pump and outer membrane permeability genes in K.

Background: The incidence of hospital-acquired infections in extensively drug-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (XDR-PA) has been increasing worldwide and is frequently associated with an increase in mortality and morbidity rates. The aim of this study was to characterize clinical XDR-PA isolates recovered during six months at three different hospitals in Egypt.

Results: Seventy hospital-acquired clinical isolates of P.
