As a drug carrier, the porosity of porous electrospun fiber can greatly affect its drug loading ability and stability. In this work, a method to calculate the porosity of porous electrospun fiber with a polarization micrograph is described. Different porosities of porous electrospun fibers were measured by scanning electron microscope images and transmission Mueller matrix M44 element images, respectively. Mueller matrix M44 element images were obtained after polarization micrograph and normalization. The pore areas of M44 images were extracted by region growing, and the contour parts were obtained by performing morphological operation on pore areas. The porosity calculated by the polarization microscope image is in good consistency with that measured by the scanning electron microscope. Our results will promote practical application of electrospun porous fibers in the early stage of screening a large number of porous materials in the biomedicine field.

Significance: Breast cancer ranks second in the world in terms of the number of women diagnosed. Effective methods for its early-stage detection are critical for facilitating timely intervention and lowering the mortality rate.
Aim: Polarimetry provides much useful information on the structural properties of breast cancer tissue samples and is a valuable diagnostic tool.

The separation of the combined effects of absorption and scattering in complex media is a major issue for better characterization and prediction of media properties. In this study, an approach coupling polarized light spectroscopy and the Mueller matrix concept were evaluated to address this issue. A set of 50 turbid liquid optical phantoms with different levels of scattering and absorption properties were made and measured at various orientations of polarizers and analyzers to obtain the 16 elements of the complete Mueller matrix in the VIS-NIR region.

Introduction: Multifocality in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) is a common event, ranging from 18% to 87%. Additional multiple foci are frequently very small and generally detected in pathology specimens. The mechanisms of intrathyroidal spread, and its correlation with age, gender, tumour size, and lymph node metastases remain unclear.

Plastic pollution is increasing dramatically worldwide, causing adverse effects on a wide variety of marine organisms at all trophic levels. As predators, sharks play a key role in marine ecosystems and they could especially be threatened by the ingestion of microplastics. This study contributes to expand the existing data on the MPs ingestion by a Mediterranean elasmobranch species, Scyliorhinus canicula, adding new information on the potential impact that this class of contaminants can have on the metabolism of this ecologically relevant species.

This study investigated the influence of biochar on temperature, pH, organic matter (OM), seed germination index (GI), the fluorescent components of dissolved organic matter (DOM), and bioavailability of DTPA-extractable Cu and Cd during composting and analyzed the relation between DTPA-extractable metals with pH, OM, and the fluorescent components of DOM. Results showed that the addition of biochar shortened the thermophilic phase, reduced the pH at maturation period, accelerated the decomposition of OM, and raised GI. Besides, it promoted the formation of components with benzene ring in FA and HyI and the degradation of protein-like organic-matters in FA and HA, which was mainly related with the decrease of DTPA-extractable Cd and the increase of DTPA-extractable Cu.
