Molecular photoswitches based on the norbornadiene-quadricylane (NBD-QC) couple have been proposed as key elements of molecular solar thermal energy storage schemes. To characterize the intrinsic properties of such systems, reversible isomerization of a charge-tagged NBD-QC carboxylate couple is investigated in a tandem ion mobility mass spectrometer, using light to induce intramolecular [2 + 2] cycloaddition of NBD carboxylate to form the QC carboxylate and driving the back reaction with molecular collisions. The NBD carboxylate photoisomerization action spectrum recorded by monitoring the QC carboxylate photoisomer extends from 290 to 360 nm with a maximum at 315 nm, and in the longer wavelength region resembles the NBD carboxylate absorption spectrum recorded in solution. Key structural and photochemical properties of the NBD-QC carboxylate system, including the gas-phase absorption spectrum and the energy storage capacity, are determined through computational studies using density functional theory.

Corticobasal degeneration (CBD) is a major four-repeat tauopathy along with progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP). Although detergent-insoluble 37-40-kDa carboxyl-terminal tau fragments (CTFs) are hallmarks of CBD pathology, the process of their formation is unknown. This study monitored the formation of CBD-type fibrils that exhibit astrocytic plaques, a characteristic CBD pathology, using its biochemical properties different from those of Alzheimer's disease/PSP-type fibrils.

Introduction: The aim of this study is focused on the development of theranostic hybrid nanovectors based on gold-doxorubicin (DOX)-gemcitabine (GEM) complexes and their active targeting with Galectin-1 (Gal-1) as a promising therapeutic and prognostic marker in cancer.
Methods: For this purpose, a gold salt (HAuCl) interacts with antitumor drugs (DOX; GEM) by chelation and then stabilizes with dicarboxylic acid-terminated polyethylene glycol (PEG) as a biocompatible surfactant. The proposed methodology is fast and reproducible, and leads to the formation of a hybrid nanovector named GEM@DOX IN PEG-AuNPs, in which the chemo-biological stability was improved.

Background: MLC1 is a membrane protein highly expressed in brain perivascular astrocytes and whose mutations account for the rare leukodystrophy (LD) megalencephalic leukoencephalopathy with subcortical cysts disease (MLC). MLC is characterized by macrocephaly, brain edema and cysts, myelin vacuolation and astrocyte swelling which cause cognitive and motor dysfunctions and epilepsy. In cultured astrocytes, lack of functional MLC1 disturbs cell volume regulation by affecting anion channel (VRAC) currents and the consequent regulatory volume decrease (RVD) occurring in response to osmotic changes.

A fluorescent labeling protocol for hydroxylated natural compounds with promising antitumor properties has been used to synthesize, in yields of 72-86%, 12 derivatives having fluorescent properties and biological activity. The reagent used for the synthesis of these fluorescent derivatives was 7-nitrobenzo-2-oxa-1,3-diazole chloride (NBD-Cl). The linkers employed to bind the NBD-Cl reagent to the natural compounds were ω-amino acids (Aa) of different chain lengths.
