Although we are familiar with common British plants that are poisonous, such as Atropa belladonna (deadly nightshade) and Aconitum napellus (monkshood), the two most poisonous plants in the British Flora are Oenanthe crocata (dead man's fingers) and Cicuta virosa (cowbane). In recent years their poisons have been shown to be polyacetylenes (n-C2H2). The plants closely resemble two of the most common plants in the family Apiaceae (Umbelliferae), celery and parsley. Unwittingly, they are ingested by naive foragers and death occurs very rapidly. The third plant Anamirta derives from South-East Asia and contains a powerful convulsant, picrotoxin, which has been used from time immemorial to catch fish, and more recently to poison Birds of Paradise. All three poisons have been shown to block the γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) system in the human brain that normally has a powerful inhibitory neuronal action. It has also been established that two groups of sedative drugs, barbiturates and benzodiazepines, exert their inhibitory action by stimulating the GABA system. These drugs are the treatments of choice for poisoning by the three vicious plants.

This study explored the distribution of macronutrients (Ca, Mg, Na, K) and lithogenic (Ba, Cr, Ni, Mn, Fe) and mining-related (As, Pb, Cd, Cu, Zn) toxic metalloids and metals (TMMs) in tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.), and its effects on plant development, productivity, genotoxicity, and human health, using a soil affected by mine tailings (AS) and an unaffected control soil (CS). The chemistry of soils reflected their mineralogy, and Fe-Ti oxides, sulfides and sulfosalts were found to be the most significant reservoirs of TMMs.

Lead (Pb), a toxic metal, causes severe health hazards to both humans and plants due to environmental pollution. Biochar addition has been efficiently utilized to enhance growth of plants as well as yield in the presence of Pb-induced stress. The present research introduces a novel use of biochar obtained from the weed Achyranthes japonica to enhance the growth of plants in Pb-contaminated soil.

Oxytetracycline (OTC), a crop-absorbable antibiotic, poses a health risk to humans through the food chain. Conversely, 24-epibrassinolide (EBL), a plant growth hormone, mitigates the toxic effects of various pollutants on plants. However, the mechanism by which exogenous EBL affects the growth of rape seedlings exposed to OTC remains largely unknown.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents an escalating global health crisis, constituting the leading cause of dementia among the elderly and profoundly impairing their quality of life. Current FDA-approved drugs, such as rivastigmine, donepezil, galantamine, and memantine, offer only modest symptomatic relief and are frequently associated with significant adverse effects. Faced with this challenge and in line with advances in the understanding of the pathophysiology of this neurodegenerative condition, various innovative therapeutic strategies have been explored.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative condition characterized by a gradual decline in cognitive function, for which few effective treatments exist. This study investigated the neuroprotective potential of root extract and its key constituents (baicalein, chrysin, oroxylin A) against AD hallmarks. The extract and its constituents exhibited antioxidant activity in the DPPH assay.
