It has been reported that patients with arthritis, osteoarthritis, atherosclerosis, coronary artery disease, brain ischemia, diabetes, and inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) suffer from pro-inflammatory and oxidant related responses. Therefore, anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant therapies are used to improve the quality of life of the patients. Saffron is a herbal drug that has immunomodulatory and antioxidant properties. Hence, Saffron and its components have been proposed as therapeutic agents for the treatment of the diseases. Therefore, this review article was designed to collect recent information regarding the effects of saffron and its components on the amelioration of the inflammatory symptoms in the autoimmune and non-autoimmune diseases and anti-cancerous effects from 1999 up to now via searching the Pubmed, Google Scholar, and Scopus databases. Due to fact that several investigations have reviewed the roles played by Saffron on autoimmune and non-autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, mood disorders, and Alzheimer's disease, this review article focuses on other diseases to keep the novelty of the present review for readers.

Molecular and spatial analysis of tertiary lymphoid structures in Sjogren's syndrome.

Rheumatology Research Group, Department of Inflammation and Ageing, College of Medicine & Health, University of Birmingham, Birmingham, UK.

Tertiary lymphoid structures play important roles in autoimmune and non-autoimmune conditions. While many of the molecular mechanisms involved in tertiary lymphoid structure formation have been identified, the cellular sources and temporal and spatial relationship remain unknown. Here we use combine single-cell RNA-sequencing, spatial transcriptomics and proteomics of minor salivary glands of patients with Sjogren's disease and Sicca Syndrome, with ex-vivo functional studies to construct a cellular and spatial map of key components involved in the formation and function of tertiary lymphoid structures.

Wolcott-Rallison Syndrome is an extremely rare syndrome characterized by infantile non-autoimmune diabetes, extensive skeletal dysplasia, and multi-organ failure requiring transplant. Prognosis is very poor, and as such, surgical intervention for symptomatic cervical spine compromise in pediatric patients has not been widely reported in part due to their high fragility. We report a complex case of Wolcott-Rallison Syndrome that presented with cervical myelopathy due to cervicomedullary compression and the exceptional surgical considerations required for successful intervention.

Background: Dry eye syndrome (DES) is common but lack of data in quality of life (QoL) of DES patients in Thailand. The primary outcome of this study was to determine QoL and health utility in patients of DES by EuroQol 5-domain (EQ-5D) of the 5-level version (5 L) instrument. The secondary outcome was comparison of the utility in the patients of DES classified by severity and causes including the autoimmune and non-autoimmune diseases.

Article Synopsis
  • Autoimmune blistering disorders (AIBD) are conditions where the body produces auto-antibodies against adhesion proteins in the skin, detectable through direct immunofluorescence (DIF) or blood tests like ELISA.
  • This study aimed to assess how well the results from a new multivariant ELISA method agreed with AIBD diagnoses established from clinical assessments, histopathology, and DIF.
  • The results showed a good overall correlation between ELISA and diagnoses, particularly strong in pemphigus vulgaris, but with variable agreement levels in other types of AIBD and limitations due to the retrospective nature of the study.
