COVID-19 is a global pandemic that is wreaking havoc with the health and economy of much of human civilization. In this document from the American Autonomic Society, we identify the potential risks of exposure to patients, physicians, and allied healthcare staff. We provide guidance for conducting autonomic function testing safely in this environment.

Impact of COVID-19 on heart rate variability in post-COVID individuals compared to a control group.

Sci Rep

Cardiopulmonary Physiotherapy Laboratory, Physical Therapy Department, Universidade Federal de São Carlos, Rodovia Washington Luiz, São Carlos, SP, 13565-905, Brazil.

This study investigated the impact of mild COVID-19 on HRV in groups stratified by time after infection and to compare to a healthy group of the same age without previous virus infection and without need of hospitalization. This is a cross-sectional study. We divided the sample into four groups: control group (CG) (n = 31), group 1 (G1): ≤6 weeks (n = 34), group 2 (G2): 2-6 months (n = 30), group 3 (G3): 7-12 months (n = 35) after infection.

Background: Patients with type 1 diabetes (DM1), even in the setting of adequate glycaemic control, have an excess risk for developing cardiovascular disease. Residual insulin secretion (RIS), measured by detectable C-peptide levels in patients with DM1, might protect against diabetes-related complications. This study aimed to examine the relationship between residual insulin secretion and prognostic markers of cardiovascular complications in patients with DM1.

Three-dimensional digital model of the facial nerve assisted in the excision of benign parotid tumors based on 3D-DESS-WE-MRI.

Department of Stomatology, Henan Provincial People's Hospital, People's Hospital of Zhengzhou University, Henan University People's Hospital, #7 Wei Wu Road, Zhengzhou, 450003, Henan, China.

This study proposes a novel surgical technique for the excision of benign parotid tumors, utilizing a extracapsular dissection guided by a three dimensional digital model of the facial nerve(3DFN-ECD) and compares its clinical efficacy with the extracapsular dissection (ECD) method. This prospective study included 68 patients with benign parotid tumors. The control group (40 patients) received the ECD treatment, while the experimental group (28 patients), underwent the 3DFN-ECD approach proposed in this study.

Patients with chronic kidney disease have a high incidence of cardiovascular diseases, and autonomic dysfunction has a determinant role in the relevant declines. Physical exercise influences heart rate variability and cardiac autonomic modulation. Thus, our objective was to systematically review, with a meta-analysis, the correlation between physical exercise interventions and alterations in cardiac autonomic modulation in hemodialysis patients.

Heart rate variability parameters indicate altered autonomic tone in subjects with COVID-19.

Sci Rep

Krannert Cardiovascular Research Center, Division of Cardiovascular Medicine, Department of Medicine, Indiana University School of Medicine, Indianapolis, IN, USA.

COVID-19 is associated with long-term cardiovascular complications. Heart Rate Variability (HRV), a measure of sympathetic (SNS) and parasympathetic (PNS) control, has been shown to predict COVID-19 outcomes and correlate with disease progression but a comprehensive analysis that includes demographic influences has been lacking. The objective of this study was to determine the balance between SNS, PNS and heart rhythm regulation in hospitalized COVID-19 patients and compare it with similar measurements in healthy volunteers and individuals with cardiovascular diseases (CVD), while also investigating the effects of age, Body Mass Index (BMI), gender and race.
