Grain refinement has been a topic of extensive research due to its scientific and technological importance as a common industrial practice for over seven decades. The traditional approach to grain refinement has been to reduce nucleation undercooling by the addition of potent nucleant particles. Here we show both theoretically and experimentally that more significant grain refinement can be achieved through increasing nucleation undercooling by using impotent nucleant particles. Based on the concept of explosive grain initiation, this new approach is illustrated by grain initiation maps and grain refinement maps and validated by experiments. It is anticipated that this new approach may lead to a profound change in both nucleation research and industrial practice well beyond metal casting.

Thermoelectric (TE) performance in materials is often constrained by the strong coupling between carrier and phonon transport, necessitating trade-offs between electrical and thermal properties that limit improvements in the figure of merit (). Herein, a novel strategy is proposed to achieve simultaneous energy filtering and enhanced phonon scattering, effectively optimizing the TE properties of CoSb-based skutterudites. By introducing CuTe nanoprecipitates into the YbCoSb matrix, interfacial barriers are formed, which selectively filter low-energy charge carriers, significantly improving the Seebeck coefficient while maintaining high carrier mobility.

Previous fMRI studies delineated focal domain-general, or multiple-demand (MD), PFC areas that co-activate during diverse cognitively demanding tasks. While there is some evidence for category-selective (face and scene) patches, in human and non-human primate PFC, these have not been systematically assessed.

Objective: To evaluate the associations between the quality of the diet and its components and microbial diversity and composition in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients.
Design And Methods: This crossectional study included PD patients for at least 3 months, aged 18-75 years and clinically stable. The Diet Quality Index (DQI), validated for the Brazilian population, is based on the energy density of 11 components ("sugar and sweets"; "beef, pork and processed meat"; "refined grains and breads"; "animal fat"; "poultry, fish and eggs"; "whole cereals, tubers and roots"; "fruits"; "non-starch vegetables"; "legumes and nuts"; "milk and dairy products"; "vegetable oil").

This study indicated that the CCHC-type zinc finger protein PbrZFP719 involves into self-incompatibility by affecting the levels of reactive oxygen species and cellulose content at the tips of pollen tubes. S-RNase-based self-incompatibility (SI) facilitates cross-pollination and prevents self-pollination, which in turn increases the costs associated with artificial pollination in fruit crops. Self S-RNase exerts its inhibitory effects on pollen tube growth by altering cell structures and components, including reactive oxygen species (ROS) level and cellulose content.
