Cutaneous metastases: A great imitator.

Neoplastic cells originating from a primary cancer can uncommonly spread to the skin, where they suggest a poor prognosis for the patient. In women, melanoma, breast, ovarian, oral cavity, and lung are the most common primary sources; in men, melanoma, lung, colon, and squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck predominate. The classic presentation of cutaneous metastases is a firm, painless, flesh-colored to an erythematous dermal nodule (or nodules); however, several other presentations, including inflammatory, cicatricial, and bullous lesions, have been reported. Cutaneous metastases may also mimic benign conditions such as lipomas, hemangiomas, or cellulitis. A high degree of clinical suspicion is necessary, and the diagnosis is confirmed by biopsy, which may also be used to establish the primary malignancy if unknown, as the histopathologic appearance of the metastatic tissue may mimic the primary tumor. Treatments include excision of the metastases, chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiation, and/or palliative care.

Recurrence beyond the second year of diagnosis and metastasis to the skin and eyelids are rare occurrences in breast cancer. When cutaneous metastases present without local recurrence, they pose a significant diagnostic challenge. Here, we describe a case of breast cancer that recurred 16 years after the initial treatment, with the only indication of recurrence being unusual skin and eyelid lesions.

Given the increase in metabolic liver diseases such as metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD) and metabolic dysfunction-associated steatohepatitis (MASH), this study investigated the impact of liver sinusoidal endothelial cell (LSEC)-specific alterations in MASLD/MASH on hepatic melanoma metastasis.

Methods: Mice were fed a choline-deficient L-amino acid-defined (CDAA) diet for ten weeks to induce MASH-associated liver fibrosis, or a CDAA diet or a high fat diet (HFD) for shorter periods of time to induce early steatosis-associated alterations.

Surgical Outcomes for Nonmelanoma Skin Cancer of the Head and Neck.

Objectives: There is no consensus on elective lymphatic dissection of the parotid and neck for nonmelanoma skin cancer (NMSC) due to challenges in detecting occult spread to these regions. This study aimed to summarize clinical data and evaluate correlations between risk factors, nodular metastasis, and the need for elective parotidectomy in patients with cutaneous squamous cell carcinoma (CSCC), Merkel cell carcinoma (MCC), and apocrine carcinoma (AC) of the head and neck, all with clear surgical margins and negative imaging results for regional metastases.

Study Design: We retrospectively reviewed 166 patients with CSCC, one with MCC, and one with AC of the head and neck, all treated surgically between September 2006 and July 2022.
