High harmonic generation (HHG) from gases and solids has been studied extensively. Whereas for liquids, it is far more challenging to understand the ultrafast dynamics with conventional methods. From a statistical perspective, we investigate the liquid-phase HHG theoretically by using a disordered linear chain. Our results reveal that (i) the harmonic spectra are characterized by a transition energy that separates the spectra into a low-energy region containing only odd harmonics and a high-energy region containing both even and odd harmonics with low yields; (ii) the transition energy depends on the fluctuation of structure and the field strength, but independent of the laser wavelength; (iii) the occurrence of dephasing is a natural result of the electron dynamics modulated by the long-range disorder. Furthermore, a simple formula is proposed to identify the transition energy, from which we correctly reproduce the experimental cutoff energies of HHG from liquid ethanol. Our results pave the way to better understand and control the HHG in liquids as another compact HHG source.

Exposure to heavy metals has been associated with affecting children's neurodevelopment, particularly increasing the risk of developing attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). The current exploratory study aims to investigate potential associations between presence of 15 different heavy metals in urine and ADHD. A total of 190 urine samples of participants from clinical and non-clinical population (non-ADHD = 66; ADHD = 124) aged between 6 and 15 years from Barcelona and Tarragona (Spain) were analysed.

In this report, we describe the photoluminescence of a homoleptic uranium(IV) alkoxide complex. Excitation of [Li(THF)][U(O Bu)] leads to the first example of photoluminescence from a well-defined actinide complex originating from an f-f excitation, supported by second order multiconfigurational electronic structure calculations including spin-orbit coupling. These calculations show strong spin-orbit coupling between the excited triplet and singlet states for the 5f-orbital manifold, which leads to a long-lived excited state lifetime of 0.

Hydrogenation of CO to methanol is foreseen as a key step to close the carbon cycle. In this study, we show that introducing Ga into silica-supported nanoparticles based on group 8-9 transition noble metals (M = Ru, Os, Rh, and Ir - Ga@SiO) switches their reactivity from producing mostly methane (sel. > 97%) to producing methanol (>50% CHOH/DME sel.

Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET) is a powerful technique used to investigate the conformational preferences of biosystems, and molecular simulations have emerged as an ideal complement to FRET due to their ability to provide structural models that can be compared with experiments. This synergy is however hampered by the approximations underlying Förster theory regarding the electronic coupling between the participating dyes: a dipole-dipole term attenuated by a simple dielectric screening factor 1/ that depends on the refractive index of the medium. Whereas the limits of the dipole approximation are well-known, detailed insights on how environment effects deviate from the 1/ assumption and modify the distance dependence that characterizes FRET as a spectroscopic ruler are still not well understood, especially in biosystems characterized by significant structural disorder.

O3-type NaNiMnO cathode material exhibits significant potential for sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) owing to its high theoretical capacity and ample sodium reservoir. Nonetheless, its practical implementation encounters considerable obstacles, such as impaired structural integrity, sensitivity to moisture, inadequate high-temperature stability, and being unstable under high-voltage conditions. This study investigates the co-substitution of Cu, Mg, and Ti, guided by principles of the periodic law, to enhance the material's stability under varying conditions.
