The nontrivial geometry encoded in the quantum mechanical wave function has important consequences for both noninteracting and interacting systems. Yet, our understanding of the relationship between geometrical effects in noninteracting systems and their interacting counterparts is far from complete. Here, we demonstrate how the single-particle Berry curvature associated with the normal phase in two dimensions modifies the fluxoid quantization of a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer superconductor. A discussion of the experimental scenarios where this anomalous quantization is expected is provided. Our work demonstrates the importance of variational Ansätze in making a clear connection between the Berry phases of single-particle and many-body wave functions.

Landau-Zener tunneling, which describes the transition in a two-level system during a sweep through an anti-crossing, is a model applicable to a wide range of physical phenomena. Realistic quantum systems are affected by dissipation due to coupling to their environments. An important aspect of understanding such open quantum systems is the relative energy scales of the system itself and the system-environment coupling, which distinguishes the weak- and strong-coupling regimes.

Highly flexible free-standing bacterial cellulose-based filter membrane with tunable wettability for high-performance water purification.

Int J Biol Macromol

Institute of Chemicobiology and Functional Materials, School of Chemical Engineering, Nanjing University of Science and Technology, 200 Xiao Ling Wei, Nanjing 210094, China. Electronic address:

Water purification has always been a critical yet challenging issue. In this study, an organic-inorganic composite membrane was developed using 2,2,6,6-tetramethylpiperidine-1-oxyl radical (TEMPO)-oxidized bacterial cellulose (BC) nanofibers and hydroxyapatite nanowires (HAPNW) with tunable wettability for advanced membrane separation applications. The resulting free-standing TEMPO-BC/HAPNW filter membrane exhibited strong mechanical strength, high flexibility, exceptional deformability, and a high pure water flux of up to 800 L·m·h due to its porous architecture and inherent hydrophilicity.

Manipulating energy migration in nanoparticles toward tunable photochromic upconversion.

Nat Commun

December 2024

State Key Laboratory of Luminescent Materials and Devices, Guangdong Provincial Key Laboratory of Fiber Laser Materials and Applied Techniques, Guangdong Engineering Technology Research Center of Special Optical Fiber Materials and Devices, South China University of Technology, Guangzhou, China.

Smart control of energy interactions plays a key role in manipulating upconversion dynamics and tuning emission colors for lanthanide-doped materials. However, quantifying the energy flux in particular energy migration in the representative sensitizer-activator coupled upconversion system has remained a challenge. Here we report a conceptual model to examine the energy flux in a single nanoparticle by designing an interfacial energy transfer mediated nanostructure.

Tightly bound electron-hole pairs (excitons) hosted in atomically-thin semiconductors have emerged as prospective elements in optoelectronic devices for ultrafast and secured information transfer. The controlled exciton transport in such excitonic devices requires manipulating potential energy gradient of charge-neutral excitons, while electrical gating or nanoscale straining have shown limited efficiency of exciton transport at room temperature. Here, we report strain gradient induced exciton transport in monolayer tungsten diselenide (WSe) across microns at room temperature via steady-state pump-probe measurement.

We present a comprehensive overview of the commissioning process and initial results of a synchrotron beamline dedicated to atomic, molecular, and optical sciences at the BL-5 undulator port of the Indus-2 synchrotron facility, Raja Ramanna Center for Advanced Technology, Indore, India. The beamline delivers a photon flux of ∼1012 photons/s with high resolving power (∼10 000) over an energy range of 6-800 eV, making it suitable for high-resolution spectroscopy in atomic, molecular, and optical science. The energy tunability from vacuum ultraviolet to soft x-ray (6-800 eV) is achieved through a varied line spacing plane grating monochromator with four gratings: very low energy (VLEG), low energy (LEG), medium energy (MEG), and high energy (HEG).
