In two sisters aged 36 and 38 years symmetrical calcifications were found in the vicinity of the pallidum in brain CT. In the younger sister epileptic seizures and transient focal signs were due to arrhythmias of the heart caused by mitral valve leaflet prolapse. In the second case no neurological signs were found. The calcifications were probably genetically determined suggesting an autosomal recessive inheritance. The described cases are another example of familial calcifications in basal ganglia without neurological changes.

Support for people living with HIV (PLHIV) as they disclose their HIV status can impact continuity of HIV treatment and adherence to antiretrovirals. In the presence of multi-level adversities, resilience among PLHIV can promote health-seeking behaviors and better health outcomes. However, few studies have examined how disclosure experience and resilience work together to impact HIV treatment outcomes among PLHIV.

Cervical cancer is the second most common malignancy among South African women and the load of abnormal cervical smears has clinical, programmatic and policy implications. This cross-sectional study of women who presented for cervical cancer screening aimed to determine the prevalence of abnormal cervical smears and associated factors in primary health care (PHC) facilities in Gauteng-the most densely populated province in South Africa. A questionnaire collected data on socio-demography, tobacco use, sexual behaviours, HIV status, past treatment for sexually transmitted infections (STI) and cervical cancer screening in the past 10 years.

Respiratory disease (RD) is a worldwide leading threat to the pig industry, but there is still limited understanding of the pathogens associated with swine RD. In this study, we conducted a nationwide genomic surveillance on identifying viruses, bacteria, and antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs) from the lungs of pigs with RD in China. By performing metatranscriptomic sequencing combined with metagenomic sequencing, we identified 21 viral species belonging to 12 viral families.

This study aimed to estimate the percentage of households with intermittent water supply (IWS) in Peru and determine the association between socioeconomic characteristics and the presence of IWS. The National Household Surveys (ENAHO) of 2017, 2018, 2019, 2019, 2021, and 2022 were used. IWS was defined as a piped water supply for less than 24 hours per day, one or more days per week.

Introduction: People with hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (hEDS) experience multisystemic dysfunction with varying severity and unpredictability of flare occurrence. Cohort studies suggest that individuals with hEDS have a higher risk for autonomic dysfunction. The gold standard for assessing autonomic function, clinically, is the heart rate variability (HRV) assessment from 24-h Holter monitor electrocardiogram data, but this is expensive and can only be performed in short durations.
