AI Article Synopsis

  • The study aimed to understand the progression, visual outcomes, and risk factors for vision loss in Chinese patients with nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) in Southern Taiwan.
  • The research included 60 patients observed over nearly a decade, analyzing their eye health records, visual acuity, visual field tests, and retinal imaging.
  • Results showed that over half of the patients experienced severe visual loss early on, with diabetes being a significant risk factor; however, there may be potential for better treatment insights based on these findings in the Chinese population compared to Caucasians.

Article Abstract

Purpose: To investigate the natural course, visual outcome, and risk factors for visual loss after nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) attack in Chinese patients from a tertiary medical center in Southern Taiwan.

Methods: This is a longitudinal observational study that included sixty NAION patients, who were seen in our neuro-ophthalmology clinic from 2007 to 2016. Records of their ophthalmic history, medical history, best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), visual field (VF) testing, and optical coherence tomography (OCT) were obtained for analysis.

Results: When the first visit was within two weeks after NAION onset, 62% of patients had BCVA of less than 0.1 (logMAR BCVA ≥ 1) and 38% had at least moderate-severe depression (VF grade ≥ 3) on VF on the initial visit. VA stabilized at three months after onset and was predictive of VA at 12 months. Diabetes mellitus was a risk factor associated with VA worsening. Sixty-one percent of patients had BCVA of less than 0.1 at 12 months after onset. VF remained relatively unchanged during the disease, with 41% eyes having VF grade ≥ 3 at 12 months after onset. On OCT, all quadrants of retinal nerve fiber layer thickened initially, returned to the level of the fellow eye at one month, and continued thinning up to 12 months slowly.

Conclusion: In Southern Taiwan, a higher proportion of Chinese patients (over half) presented with severe visual loss during the first two weeks of NAION attack and at 12 months after the onset of NAION as compared to the findings previously reported in Caucasians. Understanding the natural course of NAION in Chinese patients may provide insights toward a possible therapeutic window for NAION treatments in this group of patients.

Background: Low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) is a well-recognized risk factor for cardiovascular diseases. However, several clinical studies demonstrated an inverse association between LDL-C and mortality risk in patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI), known as the lipid paradox. This study aims to investigate the potential impact of inflammation on the association between LDL-C levels and mortality risks.

To evaluate the clinical efficacy of modified endoscopic mucosal resection (EMR) in the management of early gastrointestinal lesions. Upon endoscopic identification of the lesion, normal saline is injected into the submucosa to establish a fluid cushion, which elevates the lesion's mucosa. Methylene blue may also be applied to improve visualization of the relationship between the submucosa and muscular layer.

Benign anorectal diseases represent a prevalent and intricate category of gastrointestinal disorders, encompassing conditions such as anal fissures, fistulas, hemorrhoids, incontinence, pain, and defecation disorders. These conditions include both anatomical abnormalities and functional disorders. Some patients continue to experience discomfort such as perianal discomfort, perineal heaviness, defecation difficulties, and abdominal bloating even after anatomical issues have been addressed, severely impairing social functioning.

Acute respiratory tract infections (ARTIs) are among the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in children worldwide. Human adenovirus (HAdV) infections are estimated to account for at least 5% of pediatric ARTIs. The circulated genotypes of HAdV and the correlation between genotype and clinical manifestations in Wuhan, China, before and after the complete relaxation of nonpharmaceutical interventions against severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, remain unknown.
