Digital holographic microscopy enables the recording of sample holograms which contain 3D volumetric information. However, additional optical elements, such as partially or fully coherent light source and a pinhole, are required to induce diffraction and interference. Here, we present a deep neural network based on generative adversarial network (GAN) to perform image transformation from a defocused bright-field (BF) image acquired from a general white light source to a holographic image. Training image pairs of 11,050 for image conversion were gathered by using a hybrid BF and hologram imaging technique. The performance of the trained network was evaluated by comparing generated and ground truth holograms of microspheres and erythrocytes distributed in 3D. Holograms generated from BF images through the trained GAN showed enhanced image contrast with 3-5 times increased signal-to-noise ratio compared to ground truth holograms and provided 3D positional information and light scattering patterns of the samples. The developed GAN-based method is a promising mean for dynamic analysis of microscale objects with providing detailed 3D positional information and monitoring biological samples precisely even though conventional BF microscopic setting is utilized.

Dynamic X-ray Microtomography vs. Laser-Doppler Vibrometry: A Comparative Study.

J Assoc Res Otolaryngol

January 2025

Department of Otorhinolaryngology, Head and Neck Surgery, Inselspital, Bern University Hospital, University of Bern, 3010, Freiburgstrasse, Bern, Switzerland.

Purpose: There are challenges in understanding the biomechanics of the human middle ear, and established methods for studying this system show significant limitations. In this study, we evaluate a novel dynamic imaging technique based on synchrotron X-ray microtomography designed to assess the biomechanical properties of the human middle ear by comparing it to laser-Doppler vibrometry (LDV).

Methods: We examined three fresh-frozen temporal bones (TB), two donated by white males and one by a Black female, using dynamic synchrotron-based X-ray microtomography for 256 and 512 Hz, stimulated at 110 dB and 120 dB sound pressure level (SPL).

Algae extract-based nanoemulsions for photoprotection against UVB radiation: an electrical impedance spectroscopy study.

Sci Rep

Departamento de Farmacia, Facultad de Ciencias, Universidad Nacional de Colombia, Cra. 30 N° 45-03, Bogotá D.C., Colombia.

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancer worldwide, with exposure to UVB radiation being a significant risk factor for its development. To prevent skin cancer, continuous research efforts have focused on finding suitable photoprotective ingredients from natural sources that are also environmentally friendly. This study aimed to develop oil-in-water photoprotective nanoemulsions containing marine macroalgae extract.

Educational Strategies for Teaching Metabolic Profiles Across Three Endurance Training Zones.

Adv Physiol Educ

January 2025

Department of Biochemistry and Tissue Biology, Institute of Biology, State University of Campinas, Campinas, Brazil.

This article explores an innovative educational approach using a metabolic board designed to enhance understanding of muscle metabolism across three endurance training zones: Z1 (light intensity), Z2 (moderate intensity), and Z3 (intense/severe intensity). The aerobic threshold marks the transition from light to moderate domains, and the anaerobic threshold separates moderate from intense domains, with both thresholds adapting to training. Exercises within each training zone elicit specific adaptive responses through distinct signaling pathways, but the metabolic profile induced remains relatively constant across these intensity domains.

Reconstructing dinosaur locomotion.

Dinosaur locomotor biomechanics are of major interest. Locomotion of an animal affects many, if not most, aspects of life reconstruction, including behaviour, performance, ecology and appearance. Yet locomotion is one aspect of non-avian dinosaurs that we cannot directly observe.

Reassessing the Association of Sedentary Behavior and Physical Activity with Ischemic Stroke: A Mendelian Randomization Study.

Med Sci Sports Exerc

Department of Epidemiology and Health Statistics, West China School of Public Health and West China Fourth Hospital, Sichuan University, Chengdu, Sichuan, CHINA.

Purpose: Findings from previous Mendelian randomization (MR) studies disagreed with the current scientific consensus regarding the role of physical activity (PA) and sedentary behavior in ischemic stroke (IS). We reassessed these associations with a focus on etiological subtypes of IS and the potential mediating roles of cardiometabolic traits and brain imaging-derived phenotypes (IDPs).

Methods: We performed MR analyses using summary statistics from genome-wide association studies of sedentary behavior and PA (n = 88,411~608,595), cardiometabolic traits (n = 393,193~694,649), brain IDPs (n = 33,224) and the latest IS data (62,100 cases and 1,234,808 controls).
