The increasingly intimate contact between electronics and the human body necessitates the development of stretchable energy storage devices that can conform and adapt to the skin. As such, the development of stretchable batteries and supercapacitors has received significant attention in recent years. This review provides an overview of the general operating principles of batteries and supercapacitors and the requirements to make these devices stretchable. The following sections provide an in-depth analysis of different strategies to convert the conventionally rigid electrochemical energy storage materials into stretchable form factors. Namely, the strategies of strain engineering, rigid island geometry, fiber-like geometry, and intrinsic stretchability are discussed. A wide range of materials are covered for each strategy, including polymers, metals, and ceramics. By comparing the achieved electrochemical performance and strain capability of these different materials strategies, we allow for a side-by-side comparison of the most promising strategies for enabling stretchable electrochemical energy storage. The final section consists of an outlook for future developments and challenges for stretchable supercapacitors and batteries.

The broad temperature adaptability associated with the desolvation process remains a formidable challenge for organic electrolytes in rechargeable metal batteries, especially under low-temperature (LT) conditions. Although a traditional approach involves utilizing electrolytes with a high degree of anion participation in the solvation structure, known as weakly solvation electrolytes (WSEs), the solvation structure of these electrolytes is highly susceptible to temperature fluctuations, potentially undermining their LT performance. To address this limitation, we have devised an innovative electrolyte that harnesses the interplay between solvent molecules, effectively blending strong and weak solvents while incorporating anion participation in a solvation structure that remains mostly unchanged by temperature variations.

Stomata control plant water loss and photosynthetic carbon gain. Developing more generalized and accurate stomatal models is essential for earth system models and predicting responses under novel environmental conditions associated with global change. Plant optimality theories offer one promising approach, but most such theories assume that stomatal conductance maximizes photosynthetic net carbon assimilation subject to some cost or constraint of water.

Light metal-based nanomaterials are widely used for energy storage due to their high energy density and surface-to-volume ratio. However, their high reactivity is paradoxically both the source of advantageous properties and a hurdle to the fabrication of stable nanostructures. Here, we demonstrate the formation of nanoporous Mg via chemical redox agent-driven dealloying, which ensures minimized surface passivation and results in fine nanostructures with <50 nm of interconnected metallic ligament despite the labile chemical properties of Mg.

In addition to their pivotal roles in energy storage and expenditure, adipose tissues play a crucial part in the secretion of bioactive molecules, including peptides, lipids, metabolites, and extracellular vesicles, in response to physiological stimulation and metabolic stress. These secretory factors, through autocrine and paracrine mechanisms, regulate various processes within adipose tissues. These processes include adipogenesis, glucose and lipid metabolism, inflammation, and adaptive thermogenesis, all of which are essential for the maintenance of the balance and functionality of the adipose tissue micro-environment.
