The assessment of the effect of tree age on leaves is usually limited by the difficulty of sampling sun leaves from tall ageing trees. In this study, we investigated tree age-related effects on sun leaves in a chronosequence of beech (Fagus sylvatica L.) stands. The effects of stand age on leaf mass to area ratio (LMA), chlorophyll (Chl), epidermal polyphenols (EPhen), nitrogen and carbon contents in sun leaves were investigated in 17 even-aged stands distributed into six age classes (14-175 years old). Chl and EPhen were assessed in vivo with SPAD and Dualex portable leaf-clips respectively. Leaves were sampled by shooting and sun leaves were identified based on criteria obtained from a vertical profile of the ratio abaxial vs adaxial EPhen across the canopy. Sun leaves were characterised by a high and similar adaxial and abaxial EPhen contents, high LMA value and low mass-based Chl content. These sun leaf characteristics, together with leaf nitrogen and carbon contents, were not significantly affected by stand age. Along the chronosequence, beech trees invested a stable fraction of leaf mass into nitrogen, carbon, Chl and EPhen with decreasing leaf size, i.e. dry mass and area.

Barnyard grass is one of the most serious rice weeds, often growing near paddy fields and therefore potentially serving as a bridging host for the rice blast fungus. Natural deep eutectic solvents (NaDES) were employed for the extraction of bilberry and green tea leaves. This study explored the incorporation of these NaDES extracts into various carrier systems: hydrogels, emulsions, and emulgels stabilized with hydroxyethyl cellulose or xanthan gum. The results demonstrated that, when combined with synthetic UV filters, the NaDES extracts significantly enhanced the SPF and improved the antioxidant properties of the formulation.

To clarify the response mechanism of exogenous paclobutrazol on drought resistance in seedlings, we investigated the effects of spraying different concentrations of paclobutrazol (25, 50, 100 mg·L) on the photosynthetic and antioxidant systems of 2-year-old seedlings under drought stress using natural drought method. The results showed that drought stress significantly reduced the photosynthesis and broke the dynamic balance of antioxidant system in seedlings. Spraying with different concentrations of paclobutrazol effectively alleviated the negative impacts of drought stress, and enhanced the defense capability of photosynthetic and antioxidant systems, with the 100 mg·L paclobutrazol treatment being the most effective.
