Nonclassical fullerene is a new member of the fullerene family. In the present work, a systematic investigation on LaScN@C ( = 0-3) covering both classical and nonclassical C cages was performed utilizing density functional theory combined with statistical mechanics. At absolute zero, LaScN@-(2)-C with a heptagon-containing nonclassical carbon is the second most stable isomer, whereas at the temperature range of endohedral metallofullerene (EMF) formation, due to the large vibrational frequencies, LaScN@-(2)-C is the third most abundant isomer, and its mole fraction is very low, accounting for the low experimental yield of LaScN@-(2)-C; LaScN@-(2)-C, and LaN@-(2)-C are the overwhelming isomers of the corresponding series, but compared with the cases of ScN@C and LaScN@C, LaScN and LaN clusters suffer much larger constraints from the C cages, perhaps preventing the synthesis of LaScN@C and LaN@C species. Because of the large mole fractions and large electron donation and back-donation of LaScN@-(2)-C and LaN@-(2)-C, it can be inferred that LaScN and LaN clusters may be used to stabilize some other larger nonclassical fullerene cages. This work will provide useful insights into the origins of stabilization of nonclassical fullerene cages by endohedral derivation and guidelines for synthesis EMF with nonclassical cages.

Upon high-temperature (340-360 °C) chlorination with VCl, an isolated-pentagon-rule (IPR) -C(33) fullerene is just chlorinated to C(33)Cl and C(33)Cl, but a VCl/SbCl mixture promotes a five-step cage transformation to nonclassical C(2)Cl with two heptagons and five pairs of fused pentagons. Another chlorination-promoted seven-step transformation of an IPR fullerene removes as many as four C2 fragments from C to give a nonclassical C(1)Cl with cage heptagon and six fused pairs of pentagons. We discuss the driving forces behind the observed transformations and probable detailed pathways thereof.

High-temperature chlorination of C fullerene with SbCl proceeds five Stone-Wales rearrangements, resulting in non-classical (NC) C(NC1a)Cl with two heptagons and 14 pentagons partically fused in pairs and triples. C(NC2b)Cl with isomeric carbon cage was obtained by chlorination-promoted cage shrinkage of C two C losses. The pathways of skeletal cage trasformations, the chlorination patterns, and formation energies are discussed in detail.

The density functional theory combined with statistical thermodynamic analyses of M@C (M = U and Th) demonstrated that four isomers, M@(24109)-C, M@(24107)-C, M@(22595)-C, and M@(23349)-C, and a nonclassical isomer, M@(id7)-C, containing one heptagon ring possess outstanding thermodynamic stabilities in the two M@C series. Especially, the M@(id7)-C isomer is the first nonclassical C fullerene that can exist stably. Importantly, these five fullerene cages are found to be related in the form of Stone-Wales (SW) transformations.

A double-heptagon-containing CH (dihept-CH) was isolated and unambiguously characterized in the soot of low-pressure combustion, which shares the identical heptagonal cage as dihept-CCl previously identified in the products of carbon arc, and thus represents the first nonclassical fullerene isolable in both carbon arc and combustion.

High-temperature (440 °C) chlorination of C with SbCl promotes Stone-Wales transformations and loss of the C fragment, which results in a non-classical CCl partially hydrolyzed to CCl(OH) and CCl(OH). X-ray diffraction reveals an unprecedented C cage with three heptagons and 15 pentagons arranged in fused pairs and triples. The shortest possible transformation pathways include one C loss step and four Stone-Wales transformation steps.
