Background And Aims: Melanonychia can be a manifestation of benign or malignant pathology and often poses a diagnostic challenge on clinical examination. Even with distinguishing dermoscopic features (nail plate), it can be quite difficult to determine the nature of pigmentation as complete assessment of nail bed and matrix is still not possible. Intraoperative dermoscopy (IOD) can serve as a useful tool to appreciate the bed and matrix changes. The aim here is to study the intraoperative dermoscopic features in patients with melanonychia and correlate with histopathology.

Methods: 20 consecutive patients with melanonychia were recruited. Inclusion criteria was melanonychia of sudden onset, progressive nature, irregular width/color/symmetry on dermoscopy, positive Hutchinson sign, solitary nail involvement or associated nail dystrophy. Preoperative dermoscopy was performed and recorded. Patients were planned for nail matrix biopsy, during which IOD was performed over nail matrix and bed after removal of the nail plate. Images were recorded and analyzed and correlated with the histopathology.

Results: Out of 20 patients, 12 were females and 8 males. On IOD-histopathological correlation, 2 patients were found to have melanoma of the nail unit, 5had nail lichen planus, 9 had benign melanocytic nevi, and 4 had fungal melanonychia. IOD revealed fine, parallel and regular lines of pigmentation localized to proximal nail bed and matrix in all patients with benign melanonychia, while dark thick bands with irregular borders, dots, globules, streaks and structureless areas in the two patients with melanoma. Fungal melanonychia revealed an unremarkable nail bed and matrix on IOD.

Conclusion: Intraoperative dermoscopycan help in determining the nature of melanonychia and obviate the need to perform biopsy in certain cases. It can also aid in delineating the most suitable site for biopsy, along with grossly assessing the extent of involvement in case of malignancy.

Accurate diagnosis and assessment of breast cancer treatment responses are critical challenges in clinical practice, influencing patient treatment strategies and ultimately long-term prognosis. Currently, diagnosing breast cancer and evaluating the efficacy of neoadjuvant immunotherapy (NAIT) primarily rely on pathological identification of tumor cell morphology, count, and arrangement. However, when tumors are small, the tumors and tumor beds are difficult to detect; relying solely on tumor cell identification may lead to false negatives.

Inhibition of EphA2 by syndecan-4 in wounded skin regulates clustering of fibroblasts.

J Mol Cell Biol

School of Biochemistry, University of Bristol, University Walk, Bristol BS8 1TD, United Kingdom.

Upon injury, fibroblasts in the surrounding tissue become activated, migrating into the wound in a controlled manner. Once they arrive, they contract the wound and remodel the stroma. While certain cell surface receptors promote fibroblast migration, others cause repulsion between fibroblasts upon contact, seemingly opposing their clustering within the wound bed.

Background: Psoriasis is a common chronic systemic disease affecting the skin, nails, and joints. Nails are commonly associated with a greater severity of the disease. Radiofrequency (RF) is a nonionizing radiation that provides energy originating from electric current to generate heat inside the dermis with anti-inflammatory effects.

In-vitro investigation of chitosan/polyvinyl alcohol/TiO composite membranes for wound regeneration.

Biochem Biophys Res Commun

Department of Physics, School of Advanced Sciences, Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, 632014, India. Electronic address:

Bacterial infections significantly delay the physiological wound healing process and can cause further damage to the wound region. In the current work, we aim to design titanium dioxide nanoparticles (TiO NPs) incorporated with chitosan (Chi) and poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA) film using the casting method and to study their potential for faster wound healing. The prepared TiO NPs were analyzed for physicochemical properties, and TEM results showed an average particle size of 39.

Langer's lines, lines of cleavage, and biodynamic excisional skin tension (BEST) lines have been defined for cutaneous surgery to ensure excisional wound closure with the least tension on any part of the body and minimize scarring. This article describes nail unit incision lines (NUIL) with a similar perspective. NUIL are followed by nail surgeons to help regrowth of a normal nail; however, they are not widely understood or respected during nail surgery.
