Aims: A retrospective longitudinal study was conducted to compare directly volumetric wear of retrieved polyethylene inserts to predicted volumetric wear modelled from individual gait mechanics of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) patients.
Methods: In total, 11 retrieved polyethylene tibial inserts were matched with gait analysis testing performed on those patients. Volumetric wear on the articular surfaces was measured using a laser coordinate measure machine and autonomous reconstruction. Knee kinematics and kinetics from individual gait trials drove computational models to calculate medial and lateral tibiofemoral contact paths and forces. Sliding distance along the contact path, normal forces and implantation time were used as inputs to Archard's equation of wear to predict volumetric wear from gait mechanics. Measured and modelled wear were compared for each component.
Results: Volumetric wear rates on eight non-delaminated components measured 15.9 mm/year (standard error (SE) ± 7.7) on the total part, 11.4 mm/year (SE ± 6.4) on the medial side and 4.4 (SE ± 2.6) mm/year on the lateral side. Volumetric wear rates modelled from patient gait mechanics predicted 16.4 mm/year (SE 2.4) on the total part, 11.7 mm/year (SE 2.1) on the medial side and 4.7 mm/year (SE 0.4) on the lateral side. Measured and modelled wear volumes correlated significantly on the total part (p = 0.017) and the medial side (p = 0.012) but not on the lateral side (p = 0.154).
Conclusion: In the absence of delamination, patient-specific knee mechanics during gait directly affect wear of the tibial component in TKA. Cite this article: 2020;102-B(6 Supple A):129-137.

This paper provides a detailed analysis of the operation of representative forging tools (in the context of using various surface engineering techniques) used in the process of the hot forging of nickel-chromium steel elements. The influence of the microstructure and hardness of the material on the durability of the tools is also discussed, which is important for understanding the mechanisms of their wear. The research showed that the standard tools used in the process (only after nitriding) as a reference point worked for the shortest period, making an average of about 1400 forgings.

Purpose: To explore the associations between myopia defocus dosage (MDD), aberration coefficients (primary spherical aberration and coma), and axial elongation in children undergoing orthokeratology (ortho-k) with back optic zone diameters (BOZD) of 5 mm and 6 mm over 2 years.
Methods: Data from 80 participants from two ortho-k studies were analyzed: 22 and 58 children wore lenses with 5-mm and 6-mm BOZD, respectively. Four MDD metrics were calculated from corneal topography data over a 5-mm pupil for the 1-month and 24-month visits: the circumferential, flat, steep, and volumetric MDD.

This article presents a qualitative, quantitative, and experimental analysis of optical coherence tomography (OCT) volumes obtained using different families of non-raster trajectories. We propose a multicriteria analysis to be used in the assessment of scan trajectories used in obtaining OCT volumetric point cloud data. The novel criteria includes exploitation/exploration ratio of the OCT data obtained, smoothness of the scan trajectory and fast preview of the acquired OCT data in addition to conventional criteria; time and quality (expressed as volume similarity rather than slice-by-slice image quality).

Total Knee Replacements (TKRs) are a commonly used treatment to help patients suffering from severely damaged knee joints, which is normally brought on by osteoarthritis. The aim of the surgery is to reduce pain and regain function of the joint, however, some of these implants fail prematurely with implant wear being one of the main factors of failure.
