Carbon and oxygen burning reactions, in particular, ^{12}C+^{12}C fusion, are important for the understanding and interpretation of the late phases of stellar evolution as well as the ignition and nucleosynthesis in cataclysmic binary systems such as type Ia supernovae and x-ray superbursts. A new measurement of this reaction has been performed at the University of Notre Dame using particle-γ coincidence techniques with SAND (a silicon detector array) at the high-intensity 5U Pelletron accelerator. New results for ^{12}C+^{12}C fusion at low energies relevant to nuclear astrophysics are reported. They show strong disagreement with a recent measurement using the indirect Trojan Horse method. The impact on the carbon burning process under astrophysical scenarios will be discussed.

Introduction: Myeloproliferative neoplasms (MPN) are associated with clonal hematopoiesis, genomic instability, hemostasis dysregulation, and immune response. Classic BCR-ABL1 negative myeloproliferative neoplasms (BCR-ABL1 negative MPN), including polycythemia vera (PV), essential thrombocythemia (ET), and primary myelofibrosis (PMF), are frequently associated with somatic abnormalities in JAK2, CALR, and MPL. Mutant clones induce an inflammatory immune response leading to immuno-thrombosis.

Binocular summation of visual acuity and contrast sensitivity in children with intermittent exotropia.

BMC Ophthalmol

June 2023

Pediatric Ophthalmology and Strabismus Department, Tianjin Eye Hospital, Affiliated Eye Hospital of Nankai University, Clinical College of Ophthalmology of Tianjin Medical University, Tianjin Key Laboratory of Ophthalmology and Vision Science, Tianjin, 300020, China.

Purpose: To investigate the binocular summation (BiS) of visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS) in children with intermittent exotropia (IXT) before and after surgery and to probe the relationship between the two BiS phenomena and corresponding influencing factors.

Methods: This prospective study included 21 IXT children (11 males and 10 females; aged 6-13 years) who underwent strabismus surgery in Tianjin Eye Hospital from January to April 2022. The visual function was assessed preoperatively and 2.

The Vacuum Cherenkov Detector (VCD) for γ-ray measurements in inertial confinement fusion experiments.

Rev Sci Instrum

October 2022

Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, Livermore, California 94550, USA.

Inertial confinement fusion experiments at both the National Ignition Facility (NIF) and the Laboratory for Laser Energetics OMEGA laser facility currently utilize Cherenkov detectors, with fused silica as the Cherenkov medium. At the NIF, the Quartz Cherenkov Detectors improve the precision of neutron time-of-flight measurements; and at OMEGA, the Diagnostic for Areal Density provides measurements of capsule shell areal densities. An inherent property of fused silica is the radiator's relatively low energy threshold for Cherenkov photon production (E < 1 MeV), making it advantageous over gas-based Cherenkov detectors for experiments requiring low-energy γ detection.

On the effectiveness of proton boron fusion therapy (PBFT) at cellular level.

Sci Rep

October 2022

Division of Radiation Protection and Safety Control, Cyclotron and Radioisotope Center, Tohoku University, 6-3 Aoba, Aramaki, Aoba-Ku, Sendai, Miyagi, 980-8578, Japan.

The present work introduced a framework to investigate the effectiveness of proton boron fusion therapy (PBFT) at the cellular level. The framework consisted of a cell array generator program coupled with PHITS Monte Carlo package with a dedicated terminal-based code editor that was developed in this work. The framework enabled users to model large cell arrays with normal, all boron, and random boron filled cytoplasm, to investigate the underlying mechanism of PBFT.

Feature-based volumetric defect classification in metal additive manufacturing.

Nat Commun

October 2022

National Center for Additive Manufacturing Excellence (NCAME), Auburn University, Auburn, AL, 36849, USA.

Volumetric defect types commonly observed in the additively manufactured parts differ in their morphologies ascribed to their formation mechanisms. Using high-resolution X-ray computed tomography, this study analyzes the morphological features of volumetric defects, and their statistical distribution, in laser powder bed fused Ti-6Al-4V. The geometries of three common types of volumetric defects; i.
