People are able to rapidly extract summary statistical information about common patterns, or ensembles, that may exist in a scene, such as repeated textures or colors. Here we examined the extent to which such an ensemble perception can occur in the absence of focal visual attention using a method that has some advantages over methods previously used to study the issue. In particular, we assessed the extent to which ensembles can be processed without attention by measuring the indirect effect of a to-be-ignored ensemble on judgments of an attended ensemble. The results show that ensembles outside the focus of attention do influence judgments of attended ensembles when the to-be-ignored ensemble contains summary statistics that match a sought-for target category. Thus, an attentional control setting for specific summary statistical information permits the processing of ensembles outside of focal attention, facilitating the rapid perception of visual scenes.

Frontotemporal dementia (FTD) is a typical kind of presenile dementia with three main subtypes: behavioral-variant FTD (bvFTD), non-fluent variant primary progressive aphasia (nfvPPA), and semantic variant primary progressive aphasia (svPPA). Our aim is to classify brain images of each subject into one of the spectrums of the FTD in a hierarchical order by applying data-driven techniques. Specifically, we took 300 subjects (30 bvFTD, 41 svPPA, 25 nfvPPA, 80 Alzheimer's Disease, and 124 cognitively normal) from the Frontotemporal Lobar Degeneration Neuroimaging Initiative archive to validate our approach.

Network visualizations are understudied in graphical perception. As a result, most network visualization designs still largely rely on designer intuition and algorithm optimizations rather than being guided by knowledge of human perception. Dynamic Facial Projection Mapping (DFPM) overlays computer-generated images onto human faces to create immersive experiences that have been used in the makeup and entertainment industries. In this study, we propose two concepts to reduce the misalignment artifacts between projected images and target faces, which is a persistent challenge for DFPM. Audiovisual speech illusions are a spectacular illustration of the effect of visual cues on the perception of speech. Because they allow dissociating perception from the physical characteristics of the sensory inputs, these illusions are useful to investigate the cerebral processing of audiovisual speech. However, the meaningless, monosyllabic utterances typically used to induce illusions are far removed from natural communication through speech.
